Crop clips?

(Sorry if this question doesn't belong here but it seems as appropriate as any other talk forum.)

Does anybody know how to edit/crop vidclips? A lot of the clips posted are way long and there's only segments I want to keep from some of them. Now that I'm starting to run out of hard-drive space, I'd like to do some "downsizing" if I can. Thanks in advance.

Many people I know like the free Virtual Dub, which works for all Windows Media formats. Quicktime Player Pro can edit some formats but isn't free. I use Windows Movie Maker (part of Windows XP) for on-the-fly cropping, but the quality is often diminished.
