Cultural differences in tickling?

The Irish, German, and Japanese

I have noticed more tickling in those three cultures than in others.

To elaborate

Rhiannon, by far the Irish most impress me as ticklers. I seem to notice more Irish people who like to tickle than any other. My brother's wife is Irish and from a family of ticklers.

While I have not known many Japanese people, judging from the tickling videos I see here and on YouTube, they are the only modern culture that features it on television.

Then there are the Germans. My mother was the daughter of German immigrants that raised a family of ticklers. I seem to notice other Germans who are into it, too.

Let me know when your next family reunion is... ;-)

Well....I live in Germany, and around me there is nobody except me who is into tickling or even does a little of it without being into it. A hardly ever witnessed tickling in my childhood and teenage years. I know that for sure because the few times I did are burnt into my memory! 🙂

There are some Germans into it, yes, but certainly not more than people from other countries.

Oh, and could you define "family of ticklers"? I find that term quite interesting. 🙂

i don't know any other people besides myself (in real life, that is) who are into it. jewish or otherwise. :/ so i really can't say...

Well I'm jewish, so that makes two of us :menorah:

I'm always looking for a nice jewish girl, so if jews are more inclined to be into tickling that would be awesome!

I believe it's purely biological. The italians may be active here more than say, the Dutch, but that doesn't mean Italians are more into tickling. It's just that Italians are somehow more prone to visit the TMF.

And as far as the US being the most ticklefriendly country I have to concur when looking at the raw data but I think it has alot more to do with 300 million people living in the same country and speaking the same language than with Americans being more into tickling. There's no language barrier; I would never go to a French forum related to this fetish because frankly I just don't speak any French. And despite these differences, if you're a ticklephile living in Wyoming you're still pretty much as lonely as we are here because the tickling related activities such as munches and gatherings only happen in densely populated areas. Which is very logical.

I'd say there's just a certain percentage of the general population who has this fetish and a number of those people (a number which is growing fast due to the internet) communicates with others through usage of forums. So that's why out here there's only a handful of us but out in the north eastern part of the US there's enough people to have gatherings and munches.

I think one part of it is the fact that there are a lot of people in the same country speaking one language. But I also think that the tickling fetish per se has started in the US, with clips, magazines and stuff. I am not saying that the first people who liked tickling were in the US, but the outcoming for sure started there.

I was Born in Naples Italy (though my time there was so short i remember very little)
But i don't think i have ever associated tickling with Italy it has just always been something that was on my mind since i was old enough to remember and then it grew into a whole new beast i call a fetish.

Yes, the fetish itself may be evenly distributed, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are cultural variations in it's expression. For some reason it has seemed to be expressed more publicly here and perhaps in Japan as some have said. And I wouldn't be surprised if some cultures are more open to tickling in general by everyone beyond acceptance of the fetish.

Do you know any culture which is not open to tickling unless the culture does not tolerate people touching each other in general?

By the way, size of picture is way better now! 🙂

I think the question will get seriously confused if we don't remind ourselves that the way we, as a fetish community, experience tickling is very different from the way the general population experiences it. I think the biological state of being ticklish is universal to all ethnic and continental origins, and I think awareness of the phenomenon is universal as well. The variable, then, is how it gets used. In the mainstream, there are two basic uses of tickling: as childhood play (including parents tickling their children and children tickling each other) and as sexual play, as in, when the man tickles his girlfriend or wife as a part of the lovemaking. (That, I think, is probably more common than we think in our own cultural mainstream. I remember being in a college dorm when a couple was behind closed doors, either having sex or coming close, and I could plainly tell from the sounds that he was tickling her.) That said, the context of the question for the mainstream would be, what kinds of norms for childhood play and for male-female relations do cultures of the world have? And with that in mind, considering how patriarchal most traditionalist cultures have always been, I can't imagine tickle torture being absent from the marriage bed in any of the rural peasant cultures from which our own immigrants are descended. But, that's just a guess. If you're talking about fetish communities around the world, though, as in, comparing what can be found in Japan, Holland, etc., I think the variable there is how much people dare to identify proclivities such as either BDSM or homosexuality, and be part of communities that express them.

In the early 70's, while in the Navy, I was stationed in Morocco. I tickled
quite a few of the Moroccan women that worked in bars. They were off
the chart ticklish, and for the most didn't mind being tickled. In fact one,
who was probably 20 years my age at the time, used to kick her heels off
and place her stocking feet in my lap for some tickling.

I am a ticklish jewish girl...... I do find that more italian woman are into being tickled though..... not sure why!

This Italian guy from Chicago can say with 90 percent assurance that no one else in my family is into it. We had several Irish marry into the clan, and none of them were either.

In my experience, latinas are off-the-charts craziest of the crazy ticklish. In fact, there seems to be a geographical curve: Mediterraneans are at the top: Spanish (Mexicans included), Italian, Greek, while northern and western Europeans are a mixed bag. Asian women are at the extremes: either major-bat-shit crazy ticklish or not at all.

You got me thinking so I did a little research. This is the estimated distribution of internet users by language in 2008:

As of 2008 by Internet World Stats:
1 English 29.4%
2 Chinese 18.9
3 Spanish 8.5
4 Japanese 6.4
5 French 4.7
6 German 4.2
7 Arabic 4.1
8 Portuguese 4.0
9 Korean 2.4
10 Italian 2.4

While this is the distribution of languages among the non-English 'International Tickling Site Links':

German 24.6%
French 21.1
Japanese 12.3
Italian 10.5
Spanish 8.8
Brazilian 7.0

While this is not representative by any means, and there are other issues such as wealth and technical proficiency, it does indicate disproportionate interest among Germans, French, and Italians.

Btw, I like your map. ;-)

As far as I know, there are exactly three German tickling forums (ok, the one about ticklish celebrities is owned by an Austrian guy.....do Austrians and Germans count as one here? 🙂 ), a tickling blog by a guy from Switzerland (in German) and the German Tickle Chat.

That's why we get a high percentage. But those sites are used mainly by the same people. I don't think those numbers really tell you anything.... You know how it is with statistics..... If you try to shoot the rabbit and miss him once left and once right, the rabbit is, in average, dead, but in reality it's running away! 🙂

There are 14 German sites out of 57. It's not a representative sample and of course they're all used by the same people--but it does say something about the degree or salience of interest.

So what exactly does it say about the degree or salience of interest?

Also: 14?? Damn!! 🙂 Where do I find all these? There must be a lot out there that I don't know about!

Hm, most of the German sites are dead links, belong to one single website or just list other websites. I don't know what that's supposed to prove?
