Today marks the 65th anniversary of D-Day,the beginning of the final Allied assult on Hitlers "Fortress Europe"

Here are a few paragraphs from Wiki on that bloody, momentous day.

The Normandy Landings were the first operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord, during World War II. The landings commenced on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 British Double Summer Time (H-Hour). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval.

The assault was conducted in two phases: an air assault landing of American, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France commencing at 6:30. There were also subsidiary 'attacks' mounted under the codenames Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the Kriegsmarine and the German army from the real landing areas.[3]

The operation was the largest single-day amphibious invasion of all time, with 160,000[4] troops landing on June 6, 1944. 195,700[5] Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5,000[4] ships were involved. The invasion required the transport of soldiers and materiel from the United Kingdom by troop-laden aircraft and ships, the assault landings, air support, naval interdiction of the English Channel and naval fire-support. The landings took place along a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

Thank you Bugman!

My uncle landed on one of the beaches...I think it was Juno. To hear and watch him speak about those days? His eyes glaze and become distant, like he transports himself back.

After my first tour, he looked at me and said..."that's not what life is about, so don't get used to it"!

Anyways...Memorial Day weekend I was heading back home at got diverted thru DC.
They had about 100 veterans from WWII in the gate area at the airport. The Delta rep announced that they were there and the people at the surrounding gates got up and walked over to where they were.

Wheel chairs, canes, & walkers were the norm. Hats that stated where and when..Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Pearl Harbor, 82nd AB, were also common!
Also present were WAVES...women who had served in the Navy..
But when you looked at them...into thier eyes...they still had that..."Gleam"...

That generation survived a depression, went to war and came home to work for less than $100.00 per month and raised families of 3,4,5,6 and yes even 7 children. They worked for everything they wanted and everything they had!

The handshakes I offered were returned with the firmest of grips!

I could only surmise of my meeting with them as...

...In the presence of greatness, lies the most humble!

Thanks again Bugman for remembering and posting!

Respectfully,

Mike
