My mother went through chemo before as well. I don't find his answer
to be inappropriate though, just because I know it wasn't meant to be
ugly or funny. It's just the way he thinks.

Exactly. My mother went through chemo and then DIED of cancer and yet I still made the joke. The humor is derived from the absurdity of suggestion matching the vehemence of the dislike Saeria expressed for her hair. Chemo DOES change your hair follicles...so it's REAL, but not a REALISTIC option...the absurdity makes it humorous.

It's like that scene in Demolition Man when Stallone realizes that all money is electronic and Wesley Snipes can't rob a bank or steal someone's credit card. He thinks for a second and says "Unless he cuts someone's HAND off, let's hope he doesn't think of THAT one." Gallows humor.

I'm very sorry to hear of all of the above --- It's not a pleasant reference, certainly.

Just adding a hope that those who are undergoing chemo, such as your mother, Adam, come through it as "easily" as possible, and never need it again.

Another solution for curly hair ---

If you can manage to let it grow long enough (ouch... combing is Herculean....)

you can always give the extra length away!!!

Of course if I did that now I'd look like... Mo? Or is it Curly....
