The site is in Czech or something but I gather this whole thing is based on that Yul Brynner-James Brolin film from 1973?

Yes, the HBO series is based on the '73 Michael Crichton (He who would create Jurassic Park) film.

In the film the Delos corporation runs a high end theme park where for a $1000 a day you can be immersed in The old west (West World) 13th Century Europe (Medieval World) or the height and decadence of Imperial Rome (Roman World) Guest interact with robots whom they kill, sleep with, and so forth in this huge amusement park for adults. Of course something goes wrong, and the robots go nuts, and kill everyone. (Interesting side note; Crichton was the first person to ever conceive of the idea of a computer virus that moved from system to system infecting them in this film)The film was Crichton's first big success.

HBO is lifting the idea of a amusement part full of robots, but wants a series that will replace Game of Thrones which ends after next season. In HBO's Westworld we'll be examining two questions. The first is What is intelligence and when does self awareness start. The Robots in this series are very high end AI's and they are faced with a 'reality' where horrible things happen then they are back to normal. What happens as some of them start to question their reality? The second question is what will humans do when there is not moral consequence to their actions? You cannot murder a robot. You cannot rape one. (Or can you?) what happens to people set free from the rules they always live with.

Add in the corporate politics in the Delos corporation (Every bit as cutthroat as those on Game of Thrones) and you have a Drama that looks very interesting.

Oh yah. J. J. Abrams is producing it with his Bad Robot production company.

Yeah, this sounds a bit to-hard core for me tastes. Especially if there are scenes of torture and rape (even if the victims are robots). It does bring questions regarding morality and ethics regarding what is legal, what is a crime, and what is self-awareness though. Personally, I'd say that it doesn't matter if a person's brain is a set of algorithms or data programming. Causing pain is causing pain and it's not good for anyone or anything.

This is exactly the sort of question they want to prompt people to think about by my reading of the producers interviews. And they did say it was going to be uncomfortable to see violence on occasion in the series. They took pains to not make it gratuitous, but still impactful, as it matters to the story and what they are trying to build.

It should be interesting.
