I found a very interesting article on the democratization of the Middle East:

http://www.iht.com/articles/508791.html

IMO, a very objective and insightful article which shows some of the obstacles, certainly not an anti-American rant. Read it and tell me your opinion about it, please.

Source: International Herald Tribune, the world's biggest newspaper in English, and a must-read for diplomats all over the world.

I miss Russia....

I think the article is overpessimistic, or rather I HOPE it is...lol. Good points, but not a lot of solutions offered or even hypothesized.

It IS a problem when you atempt to instill any form of democracy/republic within the borders of a fractured country that borders on extremism. I think we're going to have to pull out and watch as yet another autocratic (at best) regime takes power. It seems that the rule of fear is the only effective one in all too many of these instances. "Freeing" them is not effective in cases like this, and I think we're doomed to failure....damn shame considering the amount of effort/lives/dollars and crap that were expended on this theoretically well conceived venture.

I predict it will be awhile before we see the USA do much more in world affairs than dole out punitive measures, mostly of the economic sort. Iraq has left a bad taste in many sectors of the country. Not sure if that's a good thing, but certainly a likely scenario...

Very true Q, but we're supposed to be talking about Iraq here, not America and Britain. 😀 😛

LOL... Good one, Jim...

Thanks for the compliment mate, but it was a bloody awful one, not a good one. 😀

But then, my humour is always bloody awful. 🙄

Not every nation would welcome a form of democracy. Different cultures and ways of thinking.
