get the most mega pixels you can afford, and some of those mail order places out of the east coast will give you a better deal than retail...but as usual, buyer beware. do your homework.

As far as basing things on brand name goes, I've been quite happy with my Fuji digital camera. But as previously mentioned you should do your homework.
