Dining at the world's most expensive restaurant

Wow...looks like an incredible culinary experience to me.

This looks amazing. Definitely a once in a lifetime type of thing and probably only appreciated by die hard foodies.

The edible ticket reminded me of the edible menus at "Moto" (RIP Chef Cantu).

The ambiance reminded me of Grant Achatz's "Alinea" in that it was almost as stimulating as the food.

And being able to make people feel something, recall a memory, get excited about the art (I would call some food art, yes) being created, is arguably priceless.

I don't know that I'd pay 1900 for that, but I am the type of person that would probably spend 500 on a 15 course 3 hour meal at some of the 3 michelin star restaurants in the world.

Still not sure what is wasteful here.

There are some who view the collective wealth of the country as inherently belonging to everybody. Such people tend to criticize what they feel is excessive spending as wasteful. They feel they have much better ideas on how that money should have been spent. I don't know of our would-be Jedi subscribes to such thinking, but if so, it could explain his comments.

My (admittedly a bit knee-jerk) first impression is that it seems like the sensory aspects of it are a bit overwrought and don't really matter much if the food isn't stellar; but the chef has got Michelin stars to his name at other venues, so it's unlikely the menu itself wouldn't be up to that standard.

And as to the subject of fine dining in general; it's not wasteful if you get something memorable out of it. Some of the greatest memories I've got so far with my fiancee involve restaurants.

It's all subjective but I understand what you mean by calling it wasteful. Let me put this into (my) perspective - I spent three months backpacking through Europe including about 2 weeks in Ibiza where this restaurant is located with an unbelievably gorgeous women that I just met. I also ran with the bulls (not really, I chickened out), hung with royalty (not really, they were at the next table), partied like a rock star, and formed life-time friendships with some of the best people anyone could have the pleasure to meet - all for same price of that one meal.

I hear ya. To me, it's beyond the price. It's the entire experience. Almost like theater, that engages all the senses. And if you can experience with friends, even better.

And I'm delighted for both of you, but will any of those restaurants admit you two again? 😀

:rowfull:

I think there's something really sick and twisted about the fact that there are starving people in the world yet there are other people who can spend $1900 on a single meal.

I feel like living in a capitalist country probably isn't for you then, huh? I don't see why people should feel guilty for living their lives just because someone on the other side of the world lives a different one. Like I'm not gonna denounce all material things because starvation exists. FOH

To an extent, you are right. I, personally, don't give a damn about how many Michelin tires the chef owns, the meal looks pretentious and gross to me.

With that said: if certain people are blown away by this, then let them eat cake....or, at the very least, sautéed crab bums soaked in their own juices.

HOWEVER...

For those of you who have said that this is wasteful, I agree absolutely. 1900 for a meal? fuck that noise. Sensory shit or elstwise IS a major waste.

If you want the same experience, then all you have to do is drop a hit of acid, wait an hour, and then eat a big mac in a dark room with a strobe light. Same thing.

Props to those who don't spit it all over the floor because you can't stop laughing or rub secret sauce through you hair because "it feels good."

That isn't a meal. It's a sci-fi movie waiting to be filmed! (Stanley Kubrick, where are you when we need you?) 🙂
