Disgusted with Montreal

Before people start giving me a taste of my own medicine, let me begin with a disclaimer:

I, Phatteus, in writing this post, mean no disrespect to the honest and hardworking people of Montreal, nor to the proud and vibrant peoples of Canada. I respect Canada and Canadians for their static and colorful culture, as well as their many contributions to world Economics and the prosperity of peace and justice in the world. The RCMPs totally kick ass, despite the fact that they use cars now, and Ottowa is one of the most beautiful cities in North America.

That said, I am completely and utterly disgusted with a small portion of the Canadian public. As some of you may know, I am a serious hockey fan. I live and breathe hockey, and this time of year is like Christmas for me, because it's Playof Season.
One of the more interesting series has been Montreal versus Boston. The Canadiens versus the Bruins. This is one of the oldest rivalries in North American Sports, and it's wonderful to see the fans get into such a heated game. I am not one to shy away from name calling or genuine anger during a hockey game. To me, hockey is the closest thing I have to organized religion. But something happened early in the series that to me is unforgiveable.
Before the game, being a game between a US team and a Canadian team in Canada, the US national anthem was played 1st. Half the crowd "boo"ed during the entirety of the US national anthem.
Now, I'm not going to play my martyr card here. I'm not going to call anyone "anti-American" or "evil" or anything else. I am simply going to call them Disrespectful. A nation's national anthem, be it the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, Iraq, Iran, anywhere, is an anthem that demands respect. People have fought and died and continue to lay down their lives for their nation's anthem. To disrespect a country's national anthem is to disrespect her people.
I would like to think that these people in Montreal were booing and hissing in protest to their bitter rivals The Boston Bruins. I personally would have waited until the color presentation was over... but then, I have something called class.

Lemme axe you quesshun: Do you know why the Montreal fans were booing the the American National Anthem?

Cheers.😀

Disrespect is not a Canadian phenomenon alone, it's widespread in the world or (particularly commercial) sports. We have this all the time here during soccer games. Just a few idiots making a lot of noise, and then the large brainless sheep flock joins in, getting infected by the "boo" virus... 🙄

Moses... I do not know why... probably several reasons.

Hal: Good point. I did not mean to single out Canada as a den of disresepct, I was simply expressing my rage at this one situation.

Well, lemme give you a hint...Quebec houses Montreal, which is a French-Canadian city...a la francais...

How's the weather b/w France and the US at the moment? 😛

Cheers.😀

Hold on...

...didn't you guys boo during our anthom in NY or Philly or something. Next (if you noticed) nowhere elts in Canada do you hear us boing the National Theam Music of any country. What can you ecpect from a province that wants to leave a country that is the clossest thing to a Utopia sence the Garden of Eden.

Slaver, I don't recall that instance, but if it did happen, I am disgusted with that as well. Do not take my meaning to say that anyone who boos at MY national anthem is an asshole. I am saying that any nation's anthem demands a certain amount of respect.

I could care less about the political climiate between France and the US. This event was not cool.

I live about two miles from the Quebec border and about 45 minutes from Montreal. I've attended many events up there, especially at the Bell Center and have rarely seen such action. In fact, only a few weeks ago, I attended a game between the Habs and my beloved NJ Devils. Both anthems were played and nary a discouraging word was uttered during our national anthem. I was attired in my official Devils jersey and my group of friends had a "Go Devils!" banner and we encountered no untoward reactions from the home crowd. It must have been an isolated incident.

Montreal is mostly known as a "French-Canadian" city, although it is much more culturally diverse. There's an adage about Montreal: "Settled by the French, invaded by the British, liberated by the Scots and built by the Irish." One of the reasons I hang out up there a lot is the heavy contingent of Scots, my countrymen.

For those who think that French-US relations have much to do with anthem-bashing, keep in mind that the French want little to do with Quebec, and the Quebecois value thier independence fiercely. They do not consider themselves "French", but Canadians of French decent. Even the language is not true Parisian French, but a localized dialect.

I would think that the incident in question is due more to the Habs' need to succeed in the playoffs, as they've failed to do in recent years. The Canadiens have a rich history in the Stanley Cup and fans in Montreal are aching for a return. Not that it excuses disrespect by any means, but I don't think it's a "French-US" thing at all.

Just my 2 Credits. 😎

Just cause you're a frog-wannabe disguised as a Noo Joisey Devil doesn't give you the right to trounce all over my interpretation of events...

...wait, maybe it does.😛

Yes, Master Dave. :bowing:

hehe.

Cheers.😀

P.M.S. Da noive!!

Thank you Dave for this information.

I know that the Habs have had a tough time in recent years in the Playoffs. I am a Rangers fan, so I too am suffering.

I understand that this instance was only due to the frustration and excitement of a few fans, and that it had little or nothing to do with the current foreign relations between the US and France. I also understand that most Quebequois are fine upstanding people. It is a shame that this incident had to occur, however, I hope that in the future, the Habitants come back to the type of glory for which they were once known.

Dude, go to a soccer-match here in Holland, for instance Ajax - ADO Den Haag (especially the ADO-Den Haag ppl) and you'll see the biggest load of disrespectful thugs ever

Riots are frequent with big soccermatches here

especially with Ajax - Feyenoord, Ajax being from our capital Amsterdam and Feyenoord being from Europe's biggest port-town Rotterdam

massive rivalry, and massive loads of complete morons ruining the game too

I agree with Dave - I don't think the Montreal fans were booing the US anthem out of Anti-American feelings per se, but just as an expression of the long-standing rivalry and the bitterness of a town that has known hockey greatness in the past and hasn't had much hockey success in recent years. Anyone who remembers or who has heard about the days of Rocket Richard knows how crazy Montreal hockey fans get over our Canadiens.

That said, I offer my apologies on behalf of the city I inhabit and love. It's definitely not cool to show disrespect for a symbol of someone's country whether intentional or not.

PS - Go Habs Go! And who else is excited about the Leafs/Sens Game 7 tonight?!?!?!

Sens don't stand a chance at the ACC.

From what I've read, the fans were apparently booing the US-led invasion/liberation of Iraq...France opted out of this conquest, n'est-ce pas?

C'mon, humour me...

Peut-etre c'est vrai, mais ici le hockey est si important que les affairs politiques, non?

And I hope you're right about Ottawa - as much as I'm a Habs fan it would be nice to see the Leafs win their first Stanley Cup since 1967.

Go Devils... ???

You mean "Go Devils bac to Jersy." right ? As for the biggest fued in Hockey, hands down Toronto and Montreal. The Savage English Vs. The Swav French. By the way Toronto may have less Stanly Cups, but we've beaten more times then not when we had faced them in the finals. I think it was 3 times an we won 2 of them.
