Do men like smart women?

To the women:
Do you feel like you have to "tone it down" and sink down a level if he's not as intelligent as you are? Or would you rather pursue your own growth of knowledge to the best of your abilities and surpass him?

I would rather not have to tone it down, but if he is two sandwiches short of a picnic, then I guess I have to. I'm not against guys who aren't that intelligent (it's not their fault), but when he thinks that procrastination is something you do in the bedroom, that just crosses the line I'm afraid.

This is a good question. I can't speak for the "adults" but I know as a teenager, there is pressure for girls to be stupid. I think a lot of girls are smarter than they're given credit for, but they say stupid things to look cute and vulnerable... It kind of sucks being 18 sometimes because most people that are older tend to think all 18 year olds are the same. I understand why some girls want to look stupid for attention or whatever, but personally, I like to hang out with people that I can talk to and that will understand what I'm trying to say and maybe challenge me a little. So I'm not sure how many guys my age appreciate that, but oh well...

I think the impression is a point of view that we women share when we see women like Jessica Simpon (chicken or fish) being idolized for their looks, and definitely not their brains. When I see that, in my opinion, that leads me to believe more people value looks than brains.

According to what I'm seeing in these posts.....I am dead wrong. Thanks guys, for giving us smart girls a spark of hope!

hands down, especially if she also loves to talk. i love being able to ask an open-ended question and then listen to her respond in detail, all the while watching her expressions and listening to her vocal inflections. One of the good things.....

To the men:
Do most of you like women (either just friends or a female partner) who are smarter (intellectually, emotionally, socially, etc) than you?

I wouldn't mind it at all if the woman is smarter than me, as long as she doesn't mind me being shorter than her (i'm only 4' 10").

At the risk of sounding like an arrogant jackass, I know what my mental capacities are. It doesn't matter if a girl knows as much as me about the same fields I do, but if she doesn't demonstrate some sort of intellectual curiosity, I'm permanently turned off.

For me, personally, intelligence is everything. I'm a bit of a geek my...ah, who am I kidding; I'm looking at a double major in pure math and engineering 😛. I've only ever seriously dated one person precisely for this reason, and since she went off to university I haven't met anybody who actually, well, does anything for me anymore. The way I see it is, if someone is as dumb as a brick, looks will be getting old real fast.

Its mainly just a requisite for stimulating conversation. I enjoy having my ideas challenged and having new points raised that I would never have seen myself. I guess thats just the way things work for me.

so what you're saying is that you'd be happy and impressed to find a woman as smart or smarter than you, to be able to challenge your ideas. you don't really say anything about over-intelligence though. is there ever TOO much brains? or are you betting that your math/engineering are just that good? 😉

i couldn't agree with you more. i'm taking a "media effects" class right now and there is so much experimental evidence that the media (TV, magazines, etc) idolize the perfect image of masculinity and femininity, and generally emphasize gender stereotypes. we gotta be careful of what information we take in.

hahaha. has someone actually said that? i'd say toning it down in some cases is good...because you don't want to bore him. and you don't want to frustrate him (kinda like rubbing in his face that you know more). but i suppose...that really won't work for a long term relationship, will it? you know, if the woman always has to check herself to make sure she's not going to offend him. and in THAT case, well, maybe it's not so great for a woman to be more intelligent than her man.

Smart women are such a turn-on for me - I love most women, but the smarter the better in my book.

Now that does not mean that smarts have to come from some sort of advanced degree or fancy educational background - not that I'm saying that's a bad thing either. But people are smart in so many different ways, and no one who understands his or her true gifts and talents should be intimidated by anyone else.

I'm always drawn to people who are smarter than me - then I'm probably going to learn a lot and have a great time doing it. Bring 'em on!

A woman that can teach me something is the greatest thing in the world! The knowledge that she can provide will make me a better cultured person and gives me the ability to connect with more people. However I need a good balance from the women I date....being one dimensional is boring to me. She can be a grad student and can help me with my qmech homework...but when I take her out to a party or a club...can she have a good time? If we are at dinner .... can she have a goofy convo..or does it does center around the 3rd ODE she has been working on all day? I date to get away from my job and my classes. I've been lucky enough to date quite a few brilliant women whose vast inteligence matched their beauty and ability to have fun...I guess thats my ideal. I don't think i've ever dated out of my leauge...but a woman whose intelligence far outmatched mine...that was beautiful and fun would definitley push that threshold.

Ok, I don't think men like STUPID women but I do think SOME men like women who need them! I can open a jar of jelly myself but the second I twist the cap and it doesnt open right away there's the BF opening it for me! When I was married I built the whole wall unit by myself no help from the ex husband (he was a moron anyway) but the new BF would never let me cause he thinks its a mans job to build and hammer and all that! Its not that I have thee impression men like STUPID women! Its more like I feel that they want to be the care giver! As a woman I feel it is my duty to allow him to think he is smarter and stronger! I guess I am old fashioned in my thoughts! BUT that doesnt make them wrong. I guess what im saying is there are no stupid women.... either a woman is street smart or book smart and some lucky enough to be both! I am street smart but that doesnt mean that the CEO of a large company is smarter then me. She might have a degree but I have a brain to. I just use mine for something other then business! If none of this makes sence sorry! I rant sometimes and my nails are wet so there might be some bad typing.... 🙂

I dont like stupid women, well ppl in general, lol./ not sayin im a rocket scientist either, but being needed is a basic human need i think whether ur male or female. personally i need a good lee right now, lol
