Do people actually care what goes on in their lives?

Does it make our crude, meagre existences so much better when we get a glimpse of which famous person fucked some other famous person, or whether they've gotten fat?

Nothing's has really brought this thought on, it just popped into my head, and now I'm pissed off for humanities sake. >.<

I could care less myself. Some people find it intresting. To each their own.

I love Jessica Simpson. I care what goes on in her life. We talk on the phone.

Fin.

I wonder the same thing about most reality shows.

Caring about what goes on in various celebrities' lives is like people who are into outer space documentaries on Discovery Channel; some people are into it, and to them it's intriguing.

I guess some people can watch a movie with some actor/actress in it, and then want to know about their lives. These are probably the same people who bother reading blogs by people they've never met like it's the next Harry Potter novel.

I'll sit down and watch a space documentary any day, but I couldn't care less whether Jennifer Anniston is over Brad Pitt or not.

The fact that most celebrity news exposes someone's personal business for profit is the part that pisses me off.

Nope. I couldn't give a rat's ass about the celebrities. I pretty much avoid watching shows that talk about celebrities and only read the tabloids when I'm extremely bored and have nothing better to do at work.

There are only a very, very, very few celebrities who are worth any notice because they actually make a difference in the world, but I like it said, there are only a very, very, very few.

I agree. I purposely don't buy those gossip magazines or watch TMZ on TV for that very reason. I like to watch shows and read interviews that they actually consent to.

Except Britany Spears. I totally googled that vag shot back in the day.

Ditto! Like what they've been doing to both Patrick Swayze and Farrah Fawcett. I happen to like them both and wish them well. But, I hate ET and other shows constantly bugging them, their families and friends to get the latest bit of info. Or worse yet, creating false stories in an attempt to get them to spill the truth in order to debunk it. I have a ral problem with shit like that.

I think they are who they are, they have their jobs, deserve just as much privacy as the rest of us (Jesus Ru, who put THAT on youtube!!!! 😀)

I'm a Doctor Who nut! Not bothered about the actors
I'm a Star Trek nut! Ditto... I've spoken with Bill once or twice, he's just a normal bloke with a job and doesn't know me from bloody Adam!

I've never fantasised over celebs or shit like that.

But I do respect them

You can always tell a good actor by...

You can't quite recognise them!

Not in the least. I'm glad I'm not famous, because I'd hate to be hounded daily like these folks are.

I read the blogs and stuff, I like to see what people are wearing and what they are buying. Every once in awhile there's a story about a celebrity buying artwork or something like that and I check that out. I like to try to make the stuff that celebrities wear way cheaper too. I've also done a series of paintings based on some elements of celebrity obsession. Basically I use the blogs as inspiration, but I am inspired by a lot. I've been a fan of trashy television for way too long, lol. I guess that's the pop culture lover in me. It's so disposable, and plastic.

Leonard Pitts had an excellent op-ed column about that recently:

At the cafe I work at there's this magazine rack right across the counter that's always in my line of sight. It's got People Magazine, Us Weekly and all that crap on it, but most of the customers who glance through those publications seem to just be looking at what celebs are wearing, judging their fashion.

I dunno. Maybe it's the glamor - hero worship, ya know?

I couldn't care less to be blunt. Nothing that happens to any of them is any more or less important JUST because it happens way more publicly.

Thanks for posting the link, this was really interesting to read. It makes me so sad to see those covers with people who are sick or dying.

The only positive thing I have personally experienced from these stories in the media is that someone close to me who has cancer would talk to me about these celebrities and then share his own stories about his disease. It did open a dialogue, but in that dialogue we discussed how unfair it is to those celebrities. With a disease you are already vulnerable, and to have to deal with all this extra crap of who to trust and what the media is portraying of you, I can not imagine it. I just hate the American perception of disease and death. It's okay to sensationalize it, but then let's not deal with it. Blah.

Excellent article, PC. Thanks for sharing it. I think that part of the problem is (don't shoot me for saying this) the internet. OK, so maybe not the actual internet, but the mentality people have as a result of the ever-increasing ease of access. People have begun to believe that, just because it's easy to share/find things, that this means that they are actually entitled to that information...whatever the cost to others.

There's a saying that goes something to the effect of...

That which should not be seen should not be written.
That which should not be heard should not be said.

In the original context, it refers mainly to vulgarity. But, it can easily apply to this. We don't have a right to know every detail about people's lives just because they happen to be public figures.

Thank you for this. It's a part of our culture I have never understood. I love knowing what my favorite entertainers are going to do next *professionally*. And if you know me, you know I don't mind a pic of their new babies. Or anybody's new babies...but what they eat/who they sleep with/how they look at 5am or after gaining a few lbs? Get a life if you actually care and especially if you PAY for the rag mags that help ruin their lives. :disgust:

They're just people like you and I! In my line of work I do pay attentionto them, what they need on a day to day basis, their style, what they enjoy i.e. gourmet foods, etc

I have a family member who is a celebrity so to me yes I care! I don't necessarily pay any attention to the "gossip" that goes on, and who got fat while spending time at McDonalds thatsort of thing. It's none of my business as to who fucked who as long as they don't fuck me out of a paycheck I'm cool with who they are and what they do! 🙂

Do people actually care what goes on in their lives?

Given the continuing popularity of TMZ, Us Magazine, etc; I'd have to say that yes, people obviously do care what goes on in the lives of celebrities.

Now, as to why that is, I couldn't quite tell you.

Nope. I never even know who half of these "celebrities" are. For example, what is a Lady Gaga?

Seriously, I just now heard of it/them/him/her.

Meh...doesn't interest me all that much. It's not like I know them personally.

I think it's really sad when people spend their lives following others around.

I doubt it. I'm thinking this is some sort of side effect/flashback of last week when I made you look at People magazine on the plane, and Cosmopolitan in the airport.

(bored, waiting)
Me: "Who looks better in this outfit? What about this outfit? Omg. Isn't she hot?"
Ru: "......."
