Does Anyone Have Any Experience with Steem.io or Steemit Blogging?

I want to start a new blog and was thinking maybe Wordpress or some other blog site other than Blogspot - Blogspot is okay, but eh... Someone recommended Steemit for bloggin but a quick look at their site tells me I have no idea what they're talking about other than you somehow get paid for producing content based on some kind of voting algorithm, maybe like Reddit? I'm not sure so I thought I'd ask - Has anyone used this site or know anything about it?
