Does anyone know this sci-fi/fantasy story?

Years ago, I read a sci-fi/fantasy story, possibly a series, that had a magician adept as the main character (at least that's who I think the main character was), and the adept had a large steamer trunk as her traveling companion...only the trunk had hundreds of feet, like a centipede, and would swallow anything that attacked it or the adept.

I have looked through every book I own, and I cannot find that story. Does anyone know the title and/or author of that story? (Or am I just having another flashback? 🙂 )

The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett, the first of many, many Discworld books. Rincewind and the Luggage appear in several other books in the series, but that's the first one, so it's probably the most likely.
