Hi All,
I have been trying to remember the name of the Psychiatrist/Professor in the 70's that used tickling as a form of therapy. Many years ago, I got a book out of a library that was all about this guy who would bring several people into a therapy session for people with major depression, anger and other problems. The people would sit in chairs and the patient would lie on their laps. The doctor would ask questions and if the patient answered inappropriately or refused to answer, everyone would tickle him or her.
Does this sound familiar and does anyone remember who this doctor was?

Thanks,
Jen

does it come with a degree?

I do not remember this but sounds great. Can I get a degree for this type of work? I would change professions in a minute (bam, you're a tickle doctor, hell yeah)

Sorry SirBear,
When I read the book, I called the university where he taught and he is dead and I believe that this type of therapy was dicontinued. I can't even remember the name of the University, but I think it was on the west coast. I would love to be in that type of therapy.

Go to the "Tickling Folklore" thread. You will find mention of "Z Therapy," invented by a shrink named Zaslow, which featured tickling. There was one article in Newsweek in 1973, then nary another mention of it. Knowledgeable people I spoke with at the time thought it was bogus.

See also the threads "Study Says Tickling May Aid in Depression" and "An awesome idea I ran into on the Web..."

Strelnikov,
Thank you very much. I did read his book several years ago. I just forgot his name. I found the book and the therapy facinating.

As for the articles you mentioned, I have seen them.

Thanks again,
Jen

Their is a new doctor who uses tickling.

I posted on this guy a few days ago. The adress to the page is below. It's not exactly psychiatry, it's more of a couple thing. I thought any body who was following this thread might be interested. The adress is below.

His name was Robert Zaslow, and the therapy was called Z Process or Attachment therapy or rage reduction. the idea was to make the person furious so they would blow off their rage and bond with others. I read about someone getting kidney damage during therapy. it was supposed to be used with really disturbed people, but they also tried it with less severe.

is this along the same lines as that 'touch therapy' where people with anti-social behavior were restrained by hugs and forced to overcome their inability to bond? this touch or hug therapy was very contreversial but seemed to have some merit. tickling someone w/ rage issues... I don't know. I would be interested in reading the Dr's arguements tho.
