Don Adams, the wry-voiced comedian who starred as the fumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in the 1960s television spoof of James Bond movies Get Smart has died. He was 82.

Adams died of a lung infection late yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, his friend and former agent Bruce Tufeld said today, adding the actor broke his hip a year ago and had been in ill health since.

As the inept Agent 86 of the super-secret federal agency CONTROL, Adams captured TV viewers with his antics in combating the evil agents of CHAOS. When his explanations failed to convince the villains or his boss, he tried another tack: "Would you believe...?" It became a popular catchphrase.

Smart was also prone to spilling things on the desk or person of his boss Thaddius (actor Edward Platt). Smart's apologetic "Sorry about that, chief" also entered the American lexicon. The spy gadgets, which aped those of the Bond movies, were a popular feature, especially the pre-cell-phone telephone in a shoe.

Get Smart twice won the Emmy for best comedy series with three Emmys for Adams as comedy actor.

Adams, who married and divorced three times and had seven children, served as the voice for the popular cartoon series Inspector Gadget. In 1980, he appeared as Maxwell Smart in a feature movie, The Nude Bomb, about a madman whose bomb destroyed people's clothing.

Yipes! First Gilligan, then "Butch" from The Little Rascals, now Maxwell Smart.

Anyone remember "Don Adams Screen Test" from the mid-70s?

I'm still waiting for the dvd release of the theatrical Get Smart movie "The Nude Bomb". I'll be sure to spend a moment of silence in....the Cone of Silence :cry1:

I'm surprised there was no mention of Adams' voice-performance of Tennessee Tuxedo...the smart-ass penguin who, together with his walrus pal Chumley, made my Saturday mornings complete. I loved those bizzare cartoons in the vein of "Bullwinkle", "Tennessee Tuxedo" and that know-it-all dog with the dorky sidekick. (All three of which were spoofed by Family Guy.)

I loved "Get Smart", and will miss Don Adams as the comic performer he was.

I loved this guy and thought he was a comic genius.
I still refer to automatic doors that slide into walls as Don Adams doors from the opening sequence to "Get Smart".

Oh my God. Tennessee Tuxedo. I'm closing my eyes, and there he is with Chumley, on the Zenith in my 1964 living room...

Of course, the writing on 'Get Smart!' was done by none other than Mel Brooks, along with Buck Henry. Now, be honest...who else on God's Green Earth could've come up with the 'Cone of Silence'?

The theme song from 'Get Smart!' alone could have my sides splitting...

Even though I was too young for the original broadcasts of "Get Smart" and "Tennessee Tuxedo," I certainly caught up to them later on as a kid, and through now. I remember in college taping whole 8 hours of "Get Smart" when it started showing on Nick-At-Nite to see more of them. Ahh, and my crush on the oft-kidnapped, bound, gassed 99, for all those, plus "Inspector Gadget," I salute and mourn the passing of Don Adams. Thanks and I'll miss him by that much. 😉

I remember growing up watching this show. I loved it, watched it everyday. I can't believe that i never picked up the fact that he played the voice of inspector gadget. Now that i think about it, it seems so clear.

Didn't they try and make another series in the mid 90's, where his son took the main role and he was the chief? was it called "Get Smarter"? I'll have to look it up.

yes, they made another short lived series in 95, called "Get Smart". It starred Andy Dick as Maxwel smart and agent 99's son. Incidently though, while i was looking it up, i noticed something. Apparently they have a "Get Smart" movie planned for 2006, written by Mel Brooks. Might be something to keep an eye out for.

GO GO Gadget sympathies......he will be truly missed.
A great comedic actor whos voice is immitated so often in commercials, cartoons and by other comics.
If immitation is the sincerest form of flattery then I too will immitate..
GO GO GADGET, to where ever you soul might rest.
Another legend passes, but never forgotten.

If that's true...I'm wondering just who would play Smart in the new Mel Brooks film. I'm hoping beyond hope that it's not Adam Sandler. I don't know how much more I can take of him... :blaugh:

I am deeply saddened to here of Don Adams passing. Sadira told me about it the other night so I had to remember some of his antics and some of his commercials. Anyone from New York should remember and electronic store from the 80's called SaveMart. Don Adams was in those commercials with his shoe phone talking about savings over the "phone" to the "Chief". The slogan jingle was " Get the picture, get the sound, get the greatest values around. Get Smart , get SaveMart smart." Yes,it is corny to remember such a commercial, but then again "Get Smart" was corny. But that is what made it so good. Rest In Peace Don Adams. You will definately be missed down here on earth.
