All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled.
You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most
drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this
CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know.

STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been
linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain)
among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use
of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA
recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative
medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements
Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control
Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent

Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head

Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough .....

I just found out and called the 800# on the container
for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily
recalling the following medicines because of a certain
ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
3D Cold & Cough Berry
3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with
the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you
to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a
refund. If you know of anyone else with small children,
PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF!

DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are
informed. They can then pass it along to their families.

To confirm these findings please take time to check the
following:

steph, did you pick up on this at the hospital? I haven't seen anything about it on television yet.

This is an old warning that's been around for years. I can't remember if there turned out to be any validity to it or not, but it's been posted on the forum before in previous years.

Scared the crap out of me when I first read it. I nearly threw every OTC medication I had in the house out. Truth is every med, even OTC stuff, carries some small risk for some small part of the population. Most can take them without incident, though.

Mimi

LOL! Oh ok good, thanks Mimi~go ahead and delete if you want!

XOXO
PS~love the new sig pic!

Actually there was truth to that when it first came out. All of the above meds had to pretty much rewrite their formulas and they were recommending to those that had them in the house to throw it out. I want to say that the Alka Seltzer cold formulas had a lot of nastiness to them . But problem solved as far as I know...

Mimi-- this is off the point of the thread, but that's a terrific new signature you have! 🙂 Makes me-- well, I can't tell you in public what. 🙂

My brother is a pharmacy tech. When this came out, I asked him about it...and have gotten updates since. Anything with more than minute traces was pulled from shelves at the time. Now, anything that still has it is within safe levels. So, if anyone has something containing it, they should be safe. If you want to double-check, just ask your pharmacist.

Another reason why marijuanna should be legalized! Pain killer, antispasmotic, antibiotic, etc. I can't take most processed meds. So, I stick to herbal remedies...and NO, not just pot.

Ann

We're very lucky out here Ann. In California it's legal. I don't smoke but I did vote it in and work on the campaign to make it legal. 🙂

XOXO

I'm with ya, Ann. Both my father and a friend of mine suffer from severe, agonizing, drop-you-to-your-knees migraines (the kind where any light or sound puts you in agony, throwing up, unbelievable pain, etc), and most of the prescription migraine meds do nothing to help. The only thing that aleviates their pain and suffering with trusted regularity is marijuana. Plus, my Dad is a paraplegic, and has been plagued with incurable, scream inducing back and stomach pains for the 30 years he's been paralyzed due to a broken back they could never fix through surgery. He NEEDS the stuff to get any relief in his life from pain. They really need to investigate the medical benefits of maijuana more closely, and make it more easily available for those reasons.

Greg, thank you VERY much. I'm flattered...

Mimi 😉

The problem becomes not just the drug, but people self medicating who take a bunch of products to alleviate symptoms without taking the time to read the labels and find out exactly what these drugs contain. Few people would ever fathom that the main ingredient in an appetite suppressant (by the way, that uses one of the side effects of the medication...) would be the same as in a cold remedy. You should also know that phenylpropanolamine is a precursor to amphetamines...just a little FYI. They treat it as a special class of drugs here in Ohio - reportable, like a controlled drug. Apparently a lot of home met labs used some of these products to do their cooking...
