** This was a little long, but TOTALLY worth typing it!

I am a scientist, which by nature means I love using data! <3. Sadly, I have yet to gather numerical statics for the following statement....
(But I do not think Its' exaggerating) to state that;
A LOT of people on here (who are into tickling as their "main playtime activity of choice"), also have a Foot Fetish. I don't think I actually need numbers to say this though, lol. Honestly it should come to no surprise that these two kinks (tickling, and feet) would seem to be a natural and logical pairing, especially for those of us on the TMF 😉

This post is an evaluation of how & why this dual-kink develops, and includes some of my own ideas, experiences and conclusions on the subject. 🙂
~ Again; I don't have exact figures on some of this stuff just yet, so I'm just state my hypothesis; "The paraphilla pairing of tickling & foot fetishism is very common, but more prevalent amoung LERS. "
~~~ I'll also explain why I think this might be the case.
So, Why do Podophilla (Foot Fetishism) & Knismolagnia (Tickling Fetishism) "overlap", or seem to "go together" so well?
A big reason for why these two phillias would co-develop is because foot fetishism is THE most common sexual phillaa that exists. Many people reading this have likely heard this before. Interestingly, By Contrast Knismolgnia is actually a rather uncommon, and semi-rare sexual phillia. (Most people even greatly dislike tickling in general).
I say thats a "big reason" because the consensus among sex- psychologists is that Podophillia makes up to 65%-70% of the people who have any type of one or more "fetish(s)". Which means that statistically, a lot of people on the TMF are likely to follow that same pattern. As well as combine that with their interest in tickling,
So why is it that these two would go together? One connection, is the' sensitivity of the feet, and their relation to the concept of tickle torture in mainstream culture. It just so happens the feet are an *extremely* ticklish area on the majority of humans, thus making that area a perfect tickle-target. The high-sensitivity of the soles & toes has even become synonymous with the idea of tickling itself.
(As seen in countless of cartoons, movies, books etc...)
Neurological roots of Sexual paraphillia development
The reason for the existence and prevalence of such strong sexual desires to begin with, is neurological in nature. The SMC or "somatosensory cortex", processes tactile or "touch" sensations. Among many others, is a region along the SMC specifically for the genitals, and that is directly next to the area specifically for the feet+toes.
Basically the "touch" processing areas of the genitals and feet are almost at the same place, and right next to each other. Is it a coincidence that the feet are the worlds' #1 sexualized body part? No, and this proximity is why that happens. 🙂
Brain activity in either area can "leak out" beyond itself, and into other areas nearby, which causes intermingling of the neuropath connections to form between them.
(High connectivity between two or more areas- anywhere in the brain, often cause one area to stimulate the other, and or both simultaneously.)
In short; when you masturbate, some activity in from "genital region" of the SMC diverts to into the "feet area", and that's why uncontrollable toe-curling during an orgasm is so common.( *Giggles* Isn't neuroscience amazing!?!)
Anyway....
Continued flow of activity to both areas can cause the SMC region for the feet to become neurologically "paired" with the region of the genitals. Which means; Physical stimulation of one part, neurologically affects the other, and vice-versa.
The brain simply translates this mutual activity as something like this;
(Feet + Genitals) → (feet = genitals)
(During intercourse) → (feet = genitals).
This "classical conditioning" of the brain can happen accidentally and somewhat quickly - just from repeating certain behaviors.
Hence- why the feet are so widely sexualized.
But, even though the conceptual "feet+tickle" connection exists, many people who have a foot fetish, DONT like foot-tickling all that much. ( Duh.... Most people really don't , sadly )
**** But for someone with both tickling, and foot fetish;
If,
( Tickling= arousing ), and ( Feet = arousing )
then,
(Foot+Tickling) → (Reinforces Both kinks)
With the "feet vs tickling" dual-kink being so common though, it seems like they got that way from"feeding off each other". Like killing two birds with one stone: foot tickling = works for both tickle and foot lovers, and reinforces both desires at once.
I wonder if someone has one of these fetishes, can they "activate" the other?...For instance, let's say somebody who didn't know they had a foot fetish, gets the chance to tickle-torture a person who they really like while their feet are in stocks. If this experience was really exhilarating to them, could it spark an interest for that person to adopt a new kink?
I really don't know for certain... But Maybe? Based on how the brain processes sensations and associates their activity to certain areas
...it could be quite feasible it does, and that it has already happened to thousands of people- on this site in particular.
**btw I'm not saying thats a bad thing, lol. Just a theory that tries to explain how & why such kinks become related to each other. 🙂
Actually, It seems like the two would go together naturally. I mean feet were pretty much designed to be tickled... Why else would they be so sensitive? Further, how can you explain their neurological proximity to the genitals? Lol,. 😛 **
** This next part is my own experience, which was the opposite of developing a double-fetish. Lol, it's interesting - trust me 😉 ***
I have always known that I had an interest in tickling since like, my childhood lol. But that young, I didn't actually know it was "something that could be sexualized". I just liked it.... a lot. lol. Like many people here with a foot & tickling paraphillia, I too would always notice when someone around me was barefoot, but my thoughts about it were very different from the one I most commonly hear, which is; "I want to tickle such-and-such persons' feet". My thoughts were essentially the opposite.
I like the idea of being tickled, much more than I do than doing it to someone else. So, I never had desires to tickle others' feet. I just took notice and imagined myself being tickled, instead of the barefooted person I saw. I think this is why I never developed a foot fetish, because that desire to act just wasn't there.
Back when I hit puberty, I thought I had a foot fetish then. Every time I would shoeless feet I would fantasize about tickling - but just in general. ! At age 11-12 or so, I still didn't know that tickling was even considered a fetish- but I did know what a foot fetish was. I guess thats why I thought that's what I had, because I couldn't grasp the concept of "sexualized tickling" being a real thing that people do- outside my imagination.
But when my family got our first home computer, I soon realized after some google-image searching, that I really didn't like feet as much as I thought I did. Just seeing pictures of them alone didn't really do anything for me.
**AMAZINGY enough - I actually remember the exact moment I typed in the words; "tickle torture" in the search bar ... And OMG....I was *SO* happy when I learned that tickling (as a sexual fetish), actually existed!!! Before that day, I wasn't even sure if anything beyond tickle me Elmo would come up if I searched for "tickling porn" or something.
- Needless to say, after said discovery I don't be,I've have ever searched for foot-only related pictures again. Hahahhaha 🙂
Back to a few years before that point in time though, I truly believed I had a foot-related kink or something... But it turned out I didn't.
I only liked the tickling aspect that they reminded me of. To a pre-internet age 11 year old who didn't know knismolagnia existed.....
What what was i supposed to think? 😛
I think the biggest reason why I Didn't develop the feet&tickli double-kink that many others have, is because I'm a ticklee. (both physically, and mentally). I never had the desire to tickle others, not once whenever I saw someones' bare feet. All that time feet just reminded me of how hott I thought tickling is. But that indirect arousal may have lead me to believe otherwise for a long time. (Pretty insightful, right? 😉
When I would imagine "tickle torture", I imagined it being done to ME, and as not something I would do to others.
Also, I didn't un-intentionally combine the two kinks together that often during "playtime activities", because my MOST ticklish area is my lower waist /along my sides. My Feet are only like my #3rd or #4th most sensitive area. So I didn't place as much emphasis on foot tickling as I did my mid-upper body.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
~ This is a simplified version of how I think some people with a tickling fetish might react to seeing feet. (When they may only have a minor interest in foot fetishism.)
1) LER: sees bare soles → Desire to tickle feet →Desire for tickling+/ feet
2) LEE: sees bare soles →Associates feet with tickling →Desire to be tickled
** In both cases, feet act as a "trigger" for tickling but in different ways. The LER is more "active", vs the LEE who's more passive about it. I think it has to be partly true, because for me I used to get turned on by seeing feet, but only because it made me think about someone tickling me. I guess for the Ler, I can see how easy it is to overlap these kinks.
I hope this post was interesting! I also hope that I helped explain how why/tickling and foot fetishism occurs/ frequently overlaps, And also explain why not everyone who has one of these two kinks, always has them both.
Dang....and I thought this was gonna be one of the usual "yeh, feet get me off" comments. Don't be so danged scientific. Oops...I'm a scientist too....never mind.
But, I do like the scientific method... Hypothesis...test....test again....and again, then evaluate. Maybe some more tests.......
Thank you for the detailed analysis. It helps a lot of people possibly struggling or curious about the connection.
I am actually very suprised by how little research actually exists on this topic, particularly neurology and tickling. I mean it's pretty easy to test... I suppose its not deemed pertinent in the eyes of modern medicine....
You should check out some of my other posts on this stuff. 🙂 I have been interpreting the data I could find
posted several articles ranging from basic tickling neuroscience, to the origins of sexual desire/ differentiation from other sexual paraphilla. 🙂
Very good article, thanks for sharing. Any theories on why men seem to be more affected by this? Or are the women just not admitting to this... hehe.
That's a awesome article I know that I have s foot fetish and a ticking fetish
Finally had a moment to read through this and you have my compliments as well. I've read a number of those observations separately over the years but this may be the first time I've seen all points grouped together.
It seems to make a lot of sense when you think about it. And yes, it goes back as far as I can remember for me as well.
Thanks for taking the time to write this!!
No problem 🙂 I am fascinated by neurology / psychology of tickling and I figured we need more consolidated information on the matter to help us better understand ourselves 🙂
Plus being a neuroscientist with a major tickling kink, Im able to use my background knowledge to formulate theories and make connections. I try to come up with better explanations of past research done in this stuff.
Plus I just enjoy writing about it! 🙂
hmm... regarding if its more common in men, personally i think it is simply because men seem to have a higher libido on average compared to women, therefore are more likely to have some type of paraphillia. I'm sure the gender ratio varies with each kink, foot fetishism has a very high percentage of males, while some BDSM polls I've seen are close to equal in some cases. But with most of them you'll likely see more men that women across the board.
Thank you for posting! After reading this, I think it's interesting to note that my favorite tickling related activity is ticklish foot worship and ticklish toe sucking. It's not only a combination of the two fetishes, but my favorite aspects of each one: foot worship and foot tickling. So as you said, it satisfies both fetishes.
Love your highly intelligent thoughtful posts on the science of tickling! It's such an unexplored territory. I've always been fascinated by the psychology of being tickled. It's great for you to add a new wrinkle and give these insights into the neuroscience as well. And it's fun reading intelligent posts on tickling!
Great evaluation,... I like formulaic logic statements, too. However the "dual kink" as you term it still reflects and incorporates a lot of cultural (and human) nuance. For instance, for those of us whose formative years coincided with the dawn of the Atomic Age,... decidedly pre-internet, there was no popular narrative on fetish stuff. No reassuring frame of reference for a roiling foot fetish, for example,.... but playfully tickling a girl's foot was an acceptable boy's prank and therefore tickling probably was often the first adolescent strategy to actually touch a female foot.
----- The dual kink gets another boost from the dual symbolism available to foot fetishism,.. ie., both power and vulnerability, eh? Covers all the bases, you might say.
I have wondered about this as well. I read The Selfish Gene many moons ago and I remember reading about alleles that occurred at approximately the same place on the chromosome usually staying together as they chromosome split up and reformed. I always wondered if it was genetic and the two characteristics just traveled together that way.
I know I posted early on in this thread... but, what about us upper-body pervs....I mean fetishists (is that a word?)? Ribs, armpits, sides. etc...
