End of the World

In approximately 5 billion years, the sun will have used up all of its hydrogen fuel, and will begin to try and fuse heavier elements, causing the core to shrink and the sun itself to expand. It will expand until it has swallowed Mercury, Venus, and probably Earth, but even if it didn't quite swallow us, it would burn all life off of the surface. It is then a Red Giant. Then, after it tries to fuse an element too heavy for it (Carbon or something) in an attempt to keep going, the fusion process will halt, and the expanded layer will simply "blow" away after a while and all we will be left with is a white dwarf, which will emit some light for another few million to a billion years before cooling completely.

The sun WILL NOT go nova. It is not massive (As in lots of mass, not size) enough to be able to. It will also NOT become a black hole or Neutron Star.

*Sigh* There's my science for the day.

HDS

You forgot the bit about the beautiful planetary nebula that will be left behind when the Type M Red giant sheds it's outer layers; the White Dwarf left behind, burning not on fusion but on it's own left over reactions; and the Black Dwarf it will become about 50,000 years after that. You also forgot to mention that five billion years is five thousand million when talking to a Brit. 😛

I bow to your superior knowledge. (Not that that is anything new.😀 )

That's your perrogative and you're entitled to it, but for the sake of those trying to have a little open-minded discussion.... keep your judgements to yourself

The key words in my post leafstk, were "I believe". (As opposed to I think everyone else should believe.) That belief isn't something that lodged in my mind as a result of being born into a religious family, finding a religion with who's lifestyle I am most comfortable, or having a look at a religion, deciding I "feel" it's right and plumping for it. It's the result of 6 years painstaking research, comparison, legwork and then even more research. Given the contents of your earlier post, I consider myself more open minded than most. What IS close-minded however, is the idea that I should remain silent just because you don't like my opinion. I may not agree with the viewpoint of people who consider themselves religious, but I openly invite debate from them about the theories I've written about. (Nor do I insist that they must have the same opinion as me, once that discussion is over.) That red coloured writing in my post was a link for anyone who hasn't yet read it, to a long essay I wrote about the history of religion. I've invited religious people to find holes in my theories, or tear my opinions to shreds; not told them to sit in the corner and remain silent.

If you're such a proponent of open-minded debate, why don't you read that essay and then tell me where you think I'm wrong and you're right? I don't just invite that sort of discussion, I welcome it! It would make a pleasant change from having just vague opinions. Nothing wrong or immoral with such thought of course, but a deep and constructive debate about this subject with someone who's bothered to actually think about it, would make my century! Believe it or not, I actually enjoy talking to and respect the minds of people who are committed to their faith on more than just a vague whim. There are some people who think a colossal amount about it before making any decision. (Quite possibly you are one of them?)

So no, I make no "judgements", I do what a precious small amount of people have done; I examine the evidence on offer, I read every holy book from the Bible, to the Koran, the Torah and texts from the Vedas that I can lay my hands on, then I compare them and actually think about what they collectively mean when put together with subjective evidence and testimony. If you can't stand that, then put me on ignore. You won't be the first!

Just for the sake of civility, I'd like to point out that I rephrased my comments in my initial post in this thread. Re-reading them it sounds like I am calling the actual people who follow religion "a complete load of utter bollocks". Such was not my intention and I've edited the post so that it more accurately reflects my sentiments.

If anyone was of the impression that I was disrespecting their right to choose their own belief, then I apologise for the misunderstanding. I respect EVERYONE'S right to express themselves however they choose, and it is one of my core beliefs that the lack of this respect is the biggest cause of so much misery in the world.

Oh, he's easily tempted, just not by me. 😛 *This small burst of humor has been brought to you by HDS. HDS, the pestilence that infects serious threads, so Ice and Kurch don't have to. We now return you to your discussion of the apocalypse.*

I applaud your explanation, and no I didn't mean my comment to be taken personal... I don't question the fact that you have studied and come to your own well thought out conclusions... I indeed invite your comments and well thought out statements. I'll read that essay of yours and let you know what I think. Any comment in the spirit of well intended debate, is most welcome 🙂

by the way, the rephrasement of those statements look much better... it was the original that I took exception too

Excellent! I get bored debating with people who agree with me mate. (Not wishing to offend those precious few who HAVE agreed with me! 😀) I'll hapilly talk to anyone, but I'm happiest chewing the fat with someone who disagrees with me, especially if said person can intelligently explain why and where they disagree. Here comes the shocker...

I used to be a Christian myself! Not exactly churchgoing, but devout enough to pray every morning and night, say grace every time I so much as drank a glass of water, etc. Always being of a scholarly bent, I decided to do some hefty research to trace the movements of Christ and indubitably prove His existence. I was rather surprised when I ended up doing exactly the opposite! Some people might expect someone who lost his faith to be a lost soul, always in search of, but never finding spiritual fulfillment. (Kind of like Arnie in End of Days.) Again I was surprised when what I found out empowered me more than religion had ever done, or ever could do.

Ah, I thought it might have. I'm glad I glanced over my writing a second time now. What it now says protrays my sentiments far more accurately and is far less likely to unintentionally offend someone. I don't mind people being pissed off with me, but I do prefer to have actually intended that result to start with. 😉

I don't think that this is an appropriate discussion for this thread... the original questions in the post were referring to references that lead to the time of the end or end of the world, as we know it... and it would be appropriate to discuss this from a biblical point of view in this thread.

However, debating the validity of the scriptures and even the existence of God and His son is another matter entirely. I'll post my response to your essay in that thread.
