It has come to my attention recently through correspondance with TMF members that many of you would like to know more about the man who often finds himself as the "Griller" and not the "Grillee". He's always piquing our interest and memories with his unusual array of questions...some serious, some silly, always entertaining...so now it's our chance to turn the table on Dave himself! 😀

If you've ever had some off the wall, or even unanswered run of the mill question you've wanted to ask Dave, but just never had the opportunity, here is the time and place to do it! Be as genuine or as creative as you'd like, but DO keep the questions here in the thread rather than PMing them to Dave personally. We'd ALL like to read his reponses, and his PM box is working overtime between his new "10 Questions" feature and the Football Pool, aside from normal Moderator business. If you are shy about posing your question and wish to remain anonymous, please PM your questions to me, and I will ask them in this thread on your behalf.

Not at all. For me, the best science fiction has dealt with social science fiction as well as techno science fiction. No matter how many new toys we come up with, we always look to the future of our social structure with uncertainty. Almost nothing is unfathomable when it comes to the things we may be capable of in the future (or in alternate universii). If you look back at the original novel of "The Planet of the Apes", it was decidedly low-tech, but was utterly alien in its approach to the social structure of not only Man, but all primates. That's what will continue to make good science fiction long after we invent the repulsorlift.

Not wanting to dis Stephen King, whom I do like...even the short story this was based on ("Trucks") was a bit on the lame side. It was well-written, but the plot was weak.

I just didn't "buy it". I'm open to films about the unexplained...but at least explain it, if that makes any sense. A comet passes by...all the trucks can drive themselves and have self-awareness and survival instincts. Why? Were they possesed by alien spirits? Did the comet awaken the long-dead Indian tribe buried nearby?

I liked the soundtrack by AC/DC, that was pretty cool. But overall, it isn't on my Top Ten of King books made into films.

Agreed - sci-fi for technology's sake may be on the downward spiral, but good sci-fi is like any other good story - it focuses on people and how they interact, whether individually or as a society, regardless of the technological surroundings.

Which reminds me: I highly recommend any book by Peter F. Hamilton (particularly "The Reality Dysfunction," which starts of his flagship trilogy) as a textbook example of "social science fiction" in the post-Asimov world.



My next question (and you knew it was coming eventually) is: Where are you ticklish, and how ticklish? Even the most die-hard 'lers have got to have their weak points, after all... 😛

Dave2112 thank you for that reply🙂 I do enjoy Steven King ,though I'd have to say my favorite movie is "CuJO" despite the dog being rabid and some people can;t watch it without being scared..
I can;t really explain myself about what transpired from the comet to have all the trucks running all by themselves and communicating with each other by
honking,ect taking over the town but I had considered that when the killings started,that the trucks transformed the life energy from the humans dying into some invisible source

Well, as much as I hate to disappoint you, I'm really not that ticklish myself. If I get snuck up on from behind and zapped in the ribs or something, I'd jump. It would tickle. For about two seconds. I'm an extremely tactile person, and have this bizarre ability to convert any sensation like that into something palatable.

Just ask Mimi and the three or four ladies at SBG who were trying to tickle my feet, only to listen to me purr as I was getting the best foot massage in history...

Ok, let's take these one at a time. First one:
This is perhaps the simplest and most difficult question one in the tickling community can be asked. I don't look for a specific type of person. Hell, I don't even really look! Of course, there's the physical attractiveness quotient, but that's going to apply to any activity that's as intimate as ours. Since there's such a physical aspect to tickling, having an attraction is obviously going to be important. It's not the be-all and end-all of it, but it's a start. So, you may ask, what makes one attractive to Yours Truly? There are certain body-types that appeal to me, but that's mostly because of the type of tickling I like to do. Whereas most guys here seem to have a foot fetish of one type or another, I have what you'd call a belly-fetish. The most attractive part of the female body, in my opinion.

More important than looks, however is something I call "ticklability". This is the intangable "thing" that makes me want to tickle someone. Her voice, her reactivity, her intelligence and most importantly, her ability to "play". I am a very verbal and interactive type of guy when it comes to tickling and I really need a partner in the effort, not just a body. It's just a "thing" that makes me want to play, not so much the looks. Paris Hilton is an attractive young woman, but given the chance, I would have no interest in tickling her (yes guys, I'm dead serious). I can't stand the lifestyle she represents or the type of person she is, and I can't just "shut it away" and have a good time.

Second question: I'm not sure I could pick a certain scenario that I liked best out of all my stories. There are certain prevelant themes that run through my works, but I've touched upon many aspects of my own personality in writing them. I'd have to say, pressed to pick one, that it would be "Silent Lucidity". The concept of being able to invade someone's dream-world and force them into your own breaks down all of the normal walls that limit a story's reality. It's the ultimate power trip, and it allowed me the freedom to realistically satiate many of my own 'lil demons.

Third question: I've never created any of my artwork from "real-life" in the sense that I don't have anyone pose for me. I think I know what you mean, though and it's close. When I first created Sara (my most prominent recurring character), she quickly evolved into a close likeness of Rebekah, my long-lamented ex-girlfriend. This wasn't anything conscious, but was obviously the part of my mind that will always miss her creeping up.

In your opinion, what is the greatest video game ever created, and why?

Although I do enjoy wasting the occasional afternoon plugging away at the ol' XBox, I'm not what you'd call a video-game afficianado. I'm very specific in the types of games I like to play. So, I can only speak from the games I've been exposed to.

Sports game: Madden '03. The best Madden game before they added so many bells and whistles that you couldn't possibly get involved in all aspects of it. Plus, that was the game in which I had my longest franchise, 12 seasons with New Orleans...six NFC Championship Games, four Super Bowls, three Super Bowl titles.

Aerial/Space combat: Battlestar Galactica. A little-known game, but one of the best interpretations of the reality of complete 3-dimensional combat. Plus, there's just no cooler fighter than the Viper.

Platform/Shooter: The original Resident Evil. The only game that actually made me jump from my seat. I mean, who didn't jump the first time those damn dogs burst through the hallway window?

Head-to-head Fighting: Star Wars - Masters of Teras Kasi. Not the most advanced or challenging fighting game, but the fights between lightsaber-wielding characters were supremely cool.

Strategy Game: Alchemy (PC). I play it all the time, just to keep my mind sharp.

(P.S. As to your question about my favorite movie, you'd be surprised to know that even though I'm the TMF's biggest Star Wars fan, my favorite single film ever is Kevin Smith's Dogma.)

This is a very good question, Mimi. Ok, I'm not going to take the easy way out and make a list, I'll pick just one. Originally I was going to say Thomas Edison, because of my family's historical connection with him (my great-grandfather was his latter-year assistant) and his creative mind, his love of invention for the betterment of mankind.

But, along similar creative lines, I'd have to go with Benjamin Franklin. As an inventor, politician, historian, writer and general human-observationist, his varied interests made him a fascinating individual. In this day and age of specialization, it would be refreshing to be able to explore everything you could be capable of.
