There are various infinite series that converge to pi, and computers can do the arithmetic to sum millions of terms of those series.

This alternating series converges very slowly, so isn't used to compute pi:

pi/4 = Arctan(1) = 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 + ...
