on Texas:
Back in the late '40s a little roadside shack opened up on Route 22, near Scotch Plains, if I remember right. It was called Texas Weiners, the owner being a service vet who was stationed there, or something like that. I think it's still there, I stopped there years back and had some great roadside food. I know that a second one on Route 22 is still there.
New Jersey's filled with great roadside fast food for travelers to the shore or the mountains. Around the corner from my wife's best friend, on Route 46 near Oxford, is a landmark called 'Hot Dog Johnny's', and it's usually filled to capacity on a weekend afternoon. Hot dogs, fries, and even bottled farm buttermilk to take home. Hot Dog Johnny's has been there for like fifty years.
Another memory from my Navy days: a place called the 'Wooden Nickel', on Military Highway in Norfolk, near Va. Beach Boulevard. It was next to Calvary Used Cars (the moveable letter sign in front would give a passage from scripture, punctuated by "We finance E-1 and up!"). Primarily deli sandwiches and burgers, you could buy three sandwiches for the price of two...the owner was from North Jersey, or something, and he used to import kanishes and Dr. Brown's soda. This was a very special place! The old triple-A ballpark was across the street, and we used to watch all those future Mets stars play for the old Tidewater Tides, with sandwiches and kanishes and Dr. Brown's soda from the Wooden Nickel. Fun days. Later on, they rebuilt the restaurant to look like something between a Mickey D's and a Fuddruckers. Unique in all the world.
