Favourite music

I remember it! :D

This was a great sound, and there were even a few bands who took it mainstream. El DeBarge mixed center-stage pop with freestyle and a dash of Cuban Jazz to go to the top of the charts. #3 on the Top 100 and #1 on the Hot R&B charts in the summer of 1985.

And now back to the countdown!

Sweet Sensation was formed in the mid 80s, made up of lead singer Betty LeBron, and backing singers, sisters Margie and Mari Hernandez.

They were signed by NYC indie label "Next Plateau Records" and they released their first single, the freestyle song "Hooked On You". It became popular in the clubs, and crossed over to the pop charts, getting into the low 60s.

After the exposure of this hit debut single, Sweet Sensation went back to the studio and recorded "Victim Of Love", but it had a more "clubby" sound, so pop radio didn't pick it up, and it wasn't a big hit.

Their third single was "Take It While It's Hot", and was released in 1987, it was a big club hit, and like "Hooked" before it, crossed over to the lower regions of the pop charts.

Sweet Sensation were then signed to major label Atco records, and their debut CD "Take It While It's Hot" was released. The 4th single "Never Let You Go" was released, and it shot to #1 on the dance charts, where it stayed for 4 weeks. It also hit the pop charts, getting into the Top 50, their highest charting single yet.

Just as their debut CD was released, Mari decided to leave the group, she was replaced by Sheila Vega. Atco records reshot the CD cover to include Sheila's image, and released what was to be the last single, "Sincerely Yours". Not only did it top the dance charts, it crossed over to the Top 20 on the pop charts.

Sweet Sensation were in the studio working on their next CD, but Atco wanted to strike while the iron was hot, and re-released "Hooked On You", shooting a new video. Just comming off of "Sincerely Yours", radio stations jumped on "Hooked On You", giving Sweet Sensation their second Top 20 Hit.

In 1990, with two Top 20 Hits, Sweet Sensation was asked to be the opening act for New Kids On The Block when they toured, and with the extra exposure, Atco released their second CD, "Love Child". The lead single was the title track, a freestyle remake of the Supremes hit. It was Sweet Sensation's 3rd Top 20 hit.

Sweet Sensation was on tour with New Kids, and shot their video for the love song/ballad "If Wishes Came True". It became their biggest hit, going to #1 on the pop charts in 1990.

In 1991, Margie and Sheila decided to leave Sweet Sensation. Betty decided to continue on, with two new singers (Belle & Janea), to complete any obligations the group had, and then dropped out of the music scene.

Last year, Betty reformed Sweet Sensation with Sheila and Jenae. They are currently touring clubs across the U.S. and performing in "multi act" freestyle shows.

WFMU is simulcasting music from the All Tomorrow's Parties festival. I've spent the evening listening to Mercury Rev, Bob Mould, Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr. and I'm now enjoying the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Oh. Favorite music. Frank Zappa would certainly fall into that category!

Good s**t, kopfhorer! WFMU has some incredible rare music archives. "All Tomorrows Parties"? Isn't that a Velvet Underground tune?
