Our local news station just reported this: There is a new virus threat. Don't open e-mails with the text "FBI: Your computer is under official surveilance because have visited illegal sites."

The FBI (and their German equivalent BKA) has issued a warning that the attachment contains a virus. Don't open it!

Thanks for the heads up Hal!...It is good practice not to open any such emails even when they appear to be from legitimate sources....

FBI Warns of E-Mail About Surveillance

Mon Nov 21, 9:07 PM ET

The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert Monday about a scam involving unsolicited e-mails, purportedly sent by the FBI, that tell computer users that their Internet surfing is being monitored by the agency.

The users are told they have visited illegal Web sites and are instructed to open an attachment to answer questions.

The FBI did not send these e-mails and does not send any other unsolicited e-mails to the public, an agency statement said. As many harmful computer viruses are located in e-mail attachments, the FBI said it strongly encourages computer users not to open attachments from unknown recipients.

The FBI is investigating the scam. Recipients of these e-mails are asked to report them by visiting the Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov.

I actually got and deleted something along those lines the other day. There's no reason the FBI would e-mail someone to warn them anyway. That's just silly.

Right after I woke up and sat down to pc with my morning java (just a few minutes ago), there was an alert from Norton to update my virus definitions because of a repidly spreading virus. Could this be what the alert was about?

I got that too, Storm. I tried updating automatically, but Norton wouldn't do it 😡, so I had to do it manually, via the Symantec website. That worked, so no worries (for now). 😀

Thanks for the heads up guys. I know I would have opened it. :ranty: I will be a little safer now than I was before. Thanks again.😀

Thanks for the information. I got such an e-mail today in my junk e-mail. However I did try and open it, and download the attachment but it would not download, so I just deleted it then from my junk mail. I wish I had seen this before trying to download it. I hope it does not cause a virus to be spread to others I e-mail. I don't have an address book, I read my e-mails and then delete them after answering them from friends. So hopefully it will not spread. Again thanks for the information and other beware it is true as I said I got such an e-mail in my junk mail today.

That very email was among those sorted into my junkmail this morning. I emptied the junkmail folder without opening any of them, I'm happy to say. 😀

Thanks for the heads up, everyone. I will delete it if I receive it. I may have received such emails in the past, but deleted them. I will do so again.
