for people that can't understand rap music

People make fun of rap too much. All rap is, is poetry with a beat.

Psycho

Cool. Now I know what they're saying between the swearing and threats in the shit that the guy across the street blares through the neighborhood. 🙄

I like the original rap from back in the 80's. And the basic style of music is cool. But, I absolutely hate a lot of the crap that's out there now....ganster rap, I think they refer to it as? I mean, really. Do people really enjoy hearing someone carrying on about their woman not giving them some and saying that they're going to rape her? (Yes, the word rape was used.) And is there a woman here who finds it romantic to hear her man talking about her using words like "fuck the bitch"? Between the violence and all the foul language, I lose interest very quickly.

Give me original rap any day of the week!

Ann

fo shizzle my nizzle! thank you Psycho for clearin that up! too many ppl diss it, cause they "steal" the beats of songs from the 80s..hey, if the licensing is gone off the beat..why not mix it up abit.

Great Dictionary!..........

.....I cant believe I spent all these years wondering what A.M. meant, apparently it means "morning" you just cant put a price on education can you?

I am suprised to find that in the letter "R" section it has no definition of the term "rapper". Let me have a go......

"Rapper"....Cloth eared talentless fuckwit who can neither sing or play an instrument, who relies on a massive entourage of talent boosting sound engineers and sychophantic hangers on and "yes" men to carve out a 15 minute long "career" in rap music.

🙄 LOL The above was a guest editorial announcement from local affiliate WRED. This opinion does not in any way express the opinions of the management of this forum or any other body. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I don't necessarily agree with that definition across the board. But, when the shoe fits (whether it be rappers or any other "artists")... 😀

Ann

PS - Red, why don't you tell us what you really think?! 😛

Blackmoon, I've gotta tell ya, I love Black music with all my heart. Soul, Funk, Disco, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, you name it. I've gotta agree to a degree with TiklDuo-Ann. Early rap, and we can go all the way back to James Brown's "Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud" and Gil Scott-Heron, said something without being overly vulgar. I mean, my favorite group is The Beatles, but if they wrote lyrics like "Hey Jude, fuck your bitch and slap your momma", I doubt I would listen to them. I enjoy the music; the words are icing on the cake. But if the icing tastes rancid, the whole cake is spoiled.

By the way, what's with the lady in the tub? If she hasn't poked a hole in her skull by now, she soon will.

i have no idea whats with the lady in the tub. i just thought it was a cool picture so i used it 😀

Yeah i can see how you agree with Ann. i'm getting more into Gothic style music more so now. But i stil from time to time like to listen to some rap while i'm on the computer surfing away!

it's okay to not like rap music, but to criticize it and insult it is disrespectful. rap music is listened to by a large culture of people. i personally wouldnt buy country music, alternative music, punk music, etc., but you dont see me saying it is crap, it's not music, it doesnt have a beat that you can dance to, etc. there are people who like those genres of music and that's their choice. fans of rap music like it because it has a beat you can dance to, lyrics that flow real nice and it sounds good. just like other genres, there are crappy songs and crappy artists, just like there are crappy country artists, crappy punk artists, crappy alternative artists and crappy heavy metal artists. but then there are those who are talented. yes, there are people who are quite talented who can rap. it is more than just making words rhyme. it is a flow and anybody who understands music should know that.

as for "gangsta rap", a certain sect of people like it. again, i can make fun of all genres of music but i dont. so why do people make posts and insult a genre of music that IS popular? if you dont like it, fine. but you are insulting people who do like it by saying their artists are not talented. it's a culture thing. let's put it this way, if you lived and grew up where these "gangsta rap" artists grew up and lived their lives, you would probably LOVE what they are rapping about. but if you didnt, you have no idea what they are rapping about. not every song is about bitches and money. listen to Tupac Shakur and hell, i invite you to watch his movie "Resurrection". you will learn just how talented he truly was. but, knowing humans in general, you wont and just badmouth Tupac. how about actually watching the movie instead of making general characterizations? trust me, it will enlighten you. Tupac was a very talented and intelligient guy.

Insulting things may be disrespectful. I'll give you that. But, criticism is actually a good thing (if done properly). When criticism is heard and given some thought you get growth. If you don't agree with the criticism, you always have the option to simply ignore it. This is true in every aspect of our daily lives. We'll always find criticism. I personally relish those times when people share constructive criticism. They help me to grow and develop my skills.

I don't know if this was meant for me or not. But, I'll address it either way. I've listened to a ton of rap music...both by choice and not. I know the experiences they refer to. I know the words they sing and the meaning behind them. I believe they have a right to say whatever they want in their songs. Like any other music, there are some songs/artist I like and others I don't. I happen to not like those that promote violence...which some actively do. I wouldn't think of insulting anyone who does enjoy it. (If someone takes their sense of worth from what other people think of something you enjoy, that's a sad situation.) But, just as they have a right to say that they like it, I have a right to say that I don't.

I loved the movie Resurrection. (In fact, it's showing on On Demand. I plan to watch it again.) And the music fit the theme. But, that doesn't mean I'm going to turn around and enjoy other songs that promote ideas I oppose. Keep in mind that saying I don't like a particular song doesn't negate the talent of the artist. There are some rappers who are very talented. There are also some (as with any other genre of music) who IMO have none at all.

Ann, i wasnt exactly pointing you out, i am pointing out the others who make remarks about rap that are less flattering (i.e. Red Indian, and countless others).

as for lyrics, a lot of rap artists rap about what they know. these guys (or gals) are surrounded by less than "stellar" people in their neighborhoods, that's why we see the use of certain words. i even made a post about the word "bitch", which explains why rap artists use that term. they are not talking about women who take care of themselves, they are talking about the "hood rats" that they are constantly surrounded by and interact with.

if i like a rap song, it because 1) it has a beat that i like. 2) the lyrics flow well. people dont like the content in the lyrics, but then again, some of those same people dont like rap lyrics, but dont mind watching rated "R" movies. wierd....

all i'm saying is those who dont like rap, fine, dont like rap. however, to go out and call ALL rap artists untalented and blast the entire genre is insulting. rap isnt defined by gangsta rap. in fact, the major gangsta rap stars usually pay respect to the rap artists of the 80's.

as for "Resurrection", damn that was a good movie. it is sad that 2pac is now longer in public view alive. he was such a talented artist.

As one who have grown up on rap music, lemme say this: some of what is out there, is pure garbage, I agree. And it is because of this garbage, many of the pioneers or people who are great artists gets labeled because of the garbage out there. So before people start criticizing, please separate the garbage from the genuine product

ok, now back to original programming, or anyone wanting to listen to Wu-Tang clan with me😀

In case you may be referring to me as one who is opposed to rap, keep in mind that I enjoy artists like Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, RunDMC and countless others.(Mostly from the 70's and 80's) As an art form, Rap is certainly creative and innovative.
But just like Britney seeing how far she can go before she's performing in the nude, the lyrics in rap seem to be intended to shock people. One more thing... in a way, I think sampling some other artist's music may be a form of plagiarism, but if it turns kids on to music from the 60's and 70's, I've really got no problem with it.

In support of "Rap".........

.......I am quite happy for these "rap artists" to go about their business, mouthing off about about what great fun it is to committ crime, beat people up, shoot people to death, talk about women as if they are house hold pets, and glorify law breaking of any kind. That is all very well, it has a certain kind of logic to it, its all pointing in the same direction.......but.......how strange it is to find how unbearably sensitive, how delicate, how fragile the whole rap movement is to any kind of critisism, from us puny law abiding citizens, who have never seen a gun, never beaten any one up for "dissing" them, never refered to a woman as a "ho" and have never pranced about in front of a camera like a big kid on the last day of term at kindergarten.

From what I can tell, most rap cuts (certainly not 'songs') deal with the following subject matter:

1)my woman's a grasping, scheming bitch, and if she's not careful, I'm gonna cap her ass

2)I'm the most important person in the neighborhood, and I'd get more accomplished if all these people weren't sticking their fucking heads up my ass

3)I'm gonna put a cap in YOUR ass

4)I got so many hos I don't know whether to shit or go blind

5)nobody understands me...

When I'm watching my TV, if I surf and pass MTV or BET, I start mimicking these guys standing there, moving around, rolling their fingers in the air, waving their arms, to me it's high comedy. For a minute, though. I then get bored and stop at Comedy Central...

Secular rap talks about Hoes Money and Cash

Christian rap talks about Gangbanging life and Christ and his love etc

to those who say rap music is this or rap music is that, let me ask you this question. how do you know? if you dont listen to rap music, how do you know what is being sad and what is actually going on? did you ever think you are making generalizations? trust me, i used to think heavy metal was NOTHING BUT Satanic music. i never listened to any of their songs, but dammit, judging by their album covers, i KNEW they were ALL Satanists. now, isnt that a generalization? same with you people who claim rap isnt music and all they rap about is money, women and violence. so, if all rap artists are thugs, then all artists of heavy metal, rock and alternative music talk about nothing but Satan, drugs and women and pimps considering the amount of groupies that they have sex with.....

see how silly that sounds?

I find myself agreeing with red indian for the FIRST TIME since Sept. 2002.

this worries me a lot...

I've never heard a poetic rap song. LOL, here's something to help all you people who don't understand rap... Great! Now we can keep track of all the rape and murder that laces this "music" like some sort of plague of mental inferiority, whilst the so-called 'artists' run around with guns pretending to be gangsters, shooting each other and various innocent bystanders full of holes in the process, all because it's "cool." Thanks to rap, "pimp" is suddenly a cool thing to be, not to mention that it's heard on a daily basis.

Is there good rap? I'm sure there must be some, but I've never heard it, because it's not the sort that most of the people I've encountered who refer to themselves as rap fans listen to. I heard an MC Hammer song or three that I liked, but there don't seem to be too many rap fans listening to Hammertime now. Blood, murder, death, defamation, rape, degradation, the list of negative attributes that is nigh-universal in rap music goes on and on and on. I'll listen to hard or soft rock from any era, easy listening, classical music, hell... I've even been known to favor a boy band tune or two, but...

As far as rap goes... "Le'me hear ya say UHHHHNNNN!"

(Oh, and banging bass with no originality or creative thought put into it, so loud that it makes your neighbor's house rattle, does not consitute a good beat. Decent justification for a beating, maybe, but not a good beat).

Y'know what I think rap is? I think that, back in the 50's, black people saved music. I think if it wasn't for black people in the 50's, there'd be no half-decent music now, and because they don't get the recognition that they honestly deserve for their contribution to the future of music, they developed rap as a payback.

Okay... I'm sorry, but I just noticed a VERY STUPID question back there. How do those of us who hate rap know what it's about? Because we've HEARD IT, imbecile! Damn it all, every other car on the highway is blasting rap beats out their open windows whenever traffic's in a snare. There's no way to avoid hearing it! It's blasting from cars, and houses, and radios, and it's on TV, and it's in commercials, and it fills the freakin' music channels! And the reason things are this way, is because there are a lot of stupid, bestial, animalistic little boys out there who like to listen to "music" about violence and degradation. It fills the lyrics of every song! You can't compare it to "all heavy metal music is Satan" because the lyrics of 90% of the heavy metal music out there DON'T go "Satan Satan Satan Satan is Great! Kill your momma! kill your momma!"

Hey, that sounds like a rap song.

"Secular rap talks about Hoes Money and Cash

Christian rap talks about Gangbanging life and Christ and his love etc"

Christian rap talks about gangbanging Christ??? Hell, it talks about "gangbanging" period?!

What the hell is this? And this from a defender of this "music," as if this were somehow in any fashion positive! Who, I note, has an image in their signature of a girl in a bathtub smashing her face against the faucet repeatedly. Yeah. Real high-society here.

Thank you Azrael man. you rock! your so kind and thought full 🙄

and when i meant Christian Rap talks about gangbanging Christ. No i didn't that mean in a sexual way so get your mind out of the gutter. what i meant was that Christian Rap talks about ''gangbanging'' and how they (The Christian Rappers) have went through the gang life and came out of it through Christ and was because they find him in there Lifes and became born again belivers in Jesus. and note about my signatures if you don't like them then go cry me a river...... 😀 I like Dark things in life such as vampires gothic scene graveyards etc

so thank you and now i take you back to this thread that got spoiled and ruined by someone. *cough*

first of all Azrael, if you want to resort to name calling, then you need to take your diapers off and grow up. calling me an imbecile only shows your mental level. i never thought it was possible for an IQ to reach negative levels.

second of all, when you're "listening" to these raps songs in your car, are you really paying attention to the lyrics? or are you just banging your head on the steering wheel? as for the bass sounds that are in rap beats, that's what rap fans like. if you dont understand it, fine. just because you have no rhythm, doesnt mean the music is bad. as for my heavy metal example, when i was younger, every sound those songs made sounded like noise. no beat, no rhythm, just a bunch of people banging their heads on the wall. as for the Satanic references, have you ever seen some of the heavy metal album covers? have you ever seen Ozzy Osbourne in action? tell me it doesnt remind you of some kind of Satanic ritual. remember when people said if you play heavy metal lyrics backwards, you get Satanic messages? if not, then crawl out of your hole and stop acting ignorant. point is, people of all cultures can find fault with ALL kinds of music. people can say classical music is too boring. people can say heavy metal is for Satanists. people can say rap is gang members glorifying violence. people can say Easy listening music is for weak people. people can say country music is for Rednecks. the list can go on and on.

bottom line is this, critics of rap arent giving constructive criticism. they are completely insulting the entire genre. are all rap lyrics rated G? hell no. are they talking about things that glorify violence? yes. but how come i dont hear the same insults for movies? how come i dont hear the same kind of insults about video games? there was a song called "Bitch" and it wasnt a rap song. do i read the same type of harsh insults about that song? no. where's the outrage for that song? Ozzy Osbourne bites the head off an animal and where's all the critics about that? to say that rap artists arent talented is nothing but a direct insult. you are insulting an entire culture. is every rap artists talented? of course not. but to make a blanket statement that NONE of rap is music, you are insulting the artists that DO have talent. you can have your opinion about rap, but INSULTS are not contstructive criticism. i would like to see you people who insult the genre to even try to make a rap song and play it in front of a pro-rap crowd. it's more than just rhyming words and putting together a beat.
