Garbage disposals, a trashy subject

I'm about to attempt a garbage disposal replacement project in an existing kitchen sink. My new disposal is sitting in the garage with an attitude that says "go ahead, Einstein, try it, I dare you".

Any experience here with this do-it-yourself silliness ?
Any horror stories ?
Is it actually a piece of cake ?
Does it always lock properly on the lockring?
Will it demolish the kitchen the first time I turn it on ?
Should I call in a pro ?
