Well, they can't possibly fuck it up any worse than he himself did.

The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock and announced a new Star Wars movie to be released in 2015.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment and consumer products.”

This means that a Disney-fied version of Star Wars will live forever. 😱

I think I just heard the sound of all the Star Wars fans from "The People vs George Lucas" drop dead from shock!!

I think the ending of the next Star Wars film, Episode 7, will be an epic lightsaber duel between Jar Jar Binks and Darth Maul, to decide who wins the title of 'Stupidest Star Wars Character In History'.

Here are some of my suggestions for the title of the next movie:
Star Wars Episode Seven: Anakin's Big Movie
Star Wars Episode Seven: Queen Amidala vs Her Doppelganger
Star Wars Episode VII: The Gungans Rise Again
Star Wars Seven: We're NOT Only In It For The Money

A lot of mixed opinions I've read around the net. I'll hold my judgement until I hear more. Disney has done a great job so far with marvel's movies. Thor, Captain America and The Avengers have all been amazing. Hope they do the same justice for Star Wars. I would hate to see it's reputation be destroyed. The original trilogy and episode 3 in my opinion were all great. The other two not so much. Guess we'll wait and see, Star Wars also has the Clone Wars tv series which is decent and also a live action tv series. which takes place between episode 3 and 4 coming soon. Here's hoping for the best.

Episode VII in 2015 will be interesting to see.

Does this make Princess Leia a Disney Princess now?

I wonder if Disney purchasing both Marvel and Lucasfilm is to sort of hedge their bets? Isn't there some copyright issue in regards to Mickey Mouse in 2019 or so? Also, George Lucas becomes the second highest majority stockholder for Disney. Further, the low key retirement of George Lucas earlier this year makes sense now! In addition, Disneys apparant bungling of the potential JOHN CARTER franchise now makes sense...who cares about that when they knew they were getting the Star Wars franchise!

Marvel and Star Wars under the Disney umbrella; thats my childhood!

Awesome news, explains a lot. Disney has already raised the bar with the Marvel Avengers and the gravy is tasting even better with the future Marvel films.

I'm excited and can't wait for 2015, it's going to be insane, great time to be a fan.

Jar Jar and Big Bird together at last....with a guest appearance by Goofy.....lol

Well according to what I read. Star Wars 7 is not going include the phantom menace trilogy but the continuing of the original characters Luke, Leia, and Han Solo. Which means recast.

Disney Star Wars:

Shia Labeof as Luke Skywalker
Brendan Fraser as Han Solo
Megan Fox as Princess Leia
John C Reily as Darth Vader

and there's gonna be some divorced people and kids stuggling with their parents, only to be resolved at the end of the movie. And it'll all be nice.

There had better not be any fucking product placements in this movie.

I'm legitimately optimistic about this. It can be easily argued that the lowest points of the Star Wars franchise as a whole were written and directed by George Lucas. Some of it's highest were things George Lucas had nothing to do with. The Thrawn Trilogy? Knights of the Old Republic? Dark Forces and Jedi Knight? Hell, The Empire Strikes Back was written by Leigh Brackett, re-written by Lawrence Kasdan, and directed by Irvin Kershner. Disney hasn't seemed to harm Pixar or Marvel at all by buying them, so I hardly think this spells doom for the creative direction of the Star Wars franchise either.
With George Lucas retiring, and with Disney's massive financial backing, this could be a really good thing for for Star Wars fans and the franchise as a whole. We'll have to wait and see when episode VII comes out whether that's true or not, but until I see more, I feel fairly optimistic about this.

Not necessarily, they're may have to be some recasting, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mark Hamill was back as Luke Skywalker. The new movies are based off of what Lucas has already created from years ago about what happens after Return of the Jedi. Luke Skywalker forms the New Republic, so they could just have it take place 30 years after Jedi, makes sense to me.

Honestly, it was about time some one took Star Wars away from Lucas. Sure, they're going to milk it for what they can, but I'm hoping for at least something adequate.
You know what? Just give it to John Lasseter.

Maybe, but i am assuming action is a part of it and after seeing the last indiana jones. harrison ford isnt up for the challege. not to mention. there will be alot of cgi light saber fighting like with palpatine and count dooku in the menace movies because most of the original actors will be in their fifties or higher by the time it is out in 2015

You mean he's got no more creative control, and the franchise which already became a corporate monster in itself, has been taken by a bigger corporate monster who, if they choose to continue movies or TV shows, will spare no expense to get the best writers and talent they can find?

This is a bad thing...how? Have you SEEN what Lucas has done to his creations in the last 15 years?
