The 3-4 defense was created by Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson, around 1947. Also called the Oklahoma defense back then.

Stram did use the 3-4 in the 60s, but he took a page from Bud. And the 80s Bears used the 46 defense, not the 3-4. Buddy Ryan is a 4 man D-line coach. He also coached the Vikings purple people eaters. And sorry but "Mike" was used for MLB long before Singletary played.

The 80s Bears used a front 4 and 3 LBs. They brought up a safety to defend the run, putting 8 men in the box. That isn't a 3-4. Buddy coined it as the 46. A 3-4 uses a front 3 with 4 LBs. But the creator of the 3-4 defense as it is known today is the current steelers defensive coordinator Dick Leabeu

Belichick used varied blitzes and such out of the 3-4, one of a few coaches to toy with it since Oklahoma was using it in the 40s, but Dick LeBeau is the creator of the modern 3-4...a big reason why the Steelers have had such incredibly consistent defenses over the last decade and a half.

OK couple things...one...Belichick wasn't the defensive coordinator of the Giants until '85...second...his genius was in running a 2 down lineman, 4 linebacker, 5 DB set against the Bills. That's the game plan that's in the Hall of Fame...it's not the 3-4...it's...well...it's whatever the hell you want to call that.

no he is the godfather of the 3-4 gotta love how your crediting bill when lebeau was running it 4 yrs earlier .. and if bill's 3-4 is somehow different in your eyes why does bill run the exact same 3-4 as lebeau to this day? and no its not a mix of the 4-3 its a more advance oklahoma defense or better known as the 3-4 .. hence the father of the modern 3-4

OK, this is giving me a headache. The defense Belichick ran in '86 was not the 3-4...it was a hybrid nickel package...I'm the biggest Belichick fan you're ever going to find but I can't give him credit for this.
