What are your sources for this information? I remeber when I first heard about Simon de Montfort on the internet, and how he was famous for tickle torture. I was still in college at the time, and decided to check out few books from the university library on the man. There was not one single mention of "tickle torture" in any of those books. Since then I have always thought the stories were all bullshit, but if you have historical sources that shows otherwise I would love to know about it.

As an alternative. Try Honey instead of salt water! No drying effect! 🙂

I remember reading somewhere (can't remember the source, sorry) that molasses was sometimes used instead of salt. Also read in a book about the history of punishment (it may have been titled The Crime of Punishment, but again not sure) that in German prisons salt was rubbed on the prisoner's "underbelly" and goats brought to lick them as a sort of pre-torture torture, to keep the prisoners miserable while awaiting the "main event".

I've read so many of these things in so many sources over the years that I almost wish I'd been keeping notes!

When it comes to historical tickle torture, I have found most claims are completely bogus. The claims are rarely backed by any reliable sources, and if you notice all the vicitms are "almost exclusively" female. It reads more like somebody's fantasy and not like any historical reality Honestly, I think most of the victims of torture would actually have prefered tickle torture rather than the torture they actually recieved.

I have wondered how real being tickled tortured by a goat is. Definitely the thought of having one's flesh licked off is not cool.

However, I have serious doubts that would be the result. As such, I might consider being put in a position where I goat could like my feet for spell. The goat won't listen to my begging for mercy but whomever put me in that position I am sure could have a lot of teasing me.

Whenever I've seen someone getting their feet licked by a goat, I've only heard them laugh. I've never heard them scream "AAAAHHHH it's tearing the flesh off my foot!!!"

The "Book of Torture" lists "Torture of the Goats Tongue" as a real torment. Also, "The Straight Dope" (Ballantaine books 198?) gives a description of how the Romans used this very torture as a death sentence on male victims.

In the research I've done over the last 20 or so years, I seen this torture referred to several times. The torture is designed to become excruciatingly painful after some time. it may start out as tickle torture, but after several hours, the tickling gives way to stinging, and eventually unbearable pain as the skin is slowly rasped away.

The texture of a goats tongue is mildly abrasive, like a light grade sandpaper, but when applied to the skin repeatedly, after many hours, it actually wears away the surface of the skin and becomes quite painful.
