I was putting together a playlist of melodic/progressive metal and came across a tune by the band Impelliteri. And it got me thinking...
Did Graham Bonnet get screwed out of the "best metal singer ever" title by being overshadowed by guitar gods? This was THE guy you called if you were a guitar hero putting together a band with your name...and needed a singer.
Starting with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, stepping into Ronnie James Dio's huge shoes, he was part of Rainbow's only real pop/rock success. He was there in Alcatrazz before Yngwie Malmsteen broke off for a solo career. He fronted Implelliteri with another shredder who became a name among musicians.
He even had an impressive solo career. Yet, Graham Bonnet never comes up in discussions of great vocalists when he was arguably one of, if not THE, best. In an era of Stevie Nicks hair, Graham wore his 50's 'do proudly. In a world of black leather, fringes and spandex, Graham wore his jacket and tie with pride. When everyone was so serious about metal, he was one fuckin' funny dude as a frontman. The guy was freakin' nuts! The hair, the clothes...it was the ultimate rebellion in an era of rebellion!
So, here's a small tribute to one the true unknown greats, Graham Bonnet! All hail the king!
