Greatest Sports Rivalries

in Portugal we have:

S.L.Benfica vs Sporting C.P. - this one is already 100 years old, with both clubs being actually close neighboors, both from Lisbon, the two stadiums are less than a mile apart. The rivalry was pretty hot and add some high marks. Some of you might have eard about Eusébio, terrific player! Well...he was brought from Moçambique by Benfica and Sporting kidnaped him at the airport and held him at an apartment in Algarve (he was just 18). Fortunatelly, in a bold rescue atempt, some Benfica suporters got into the apartment and got Eusebio back....he became the best portuguese player ever and one of the best in soccer history.

S.L.Benfica/Sporting vs F.C.Porto - this is based on the older rivalry bettween the two cities (Lisbon and Oporto). Basically there is allways a terrible rivalry bettween the two cities and this is allways eightened by the clubs. You allways have Porto suporters singing "We want to see lisbon in flames" with us from Lisbon allways answering in great stile also 😛

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens - NHL
Blue Jays vs Tigers MLB
Argonauts vs Tigercats CFL
All Blacks vs Wallabys (Aus) Rugby
Argentina vs Brasil Soccer

Maybe India Vs Pakistan at cricket? Two nuclear powers and volatile next door neighbours competing in what is probably each respective countries national sport with national pride at stake! Explosive!

Alternatively maybe the Glasgow derby between Rangers and Celtic in football would bring religious and other tensions to the fore.

Im sure the Argies against the Samba boys would be an explosive South American Encounter, but i'd rather watch European teams. England Vs Germany with a Russian Linesman anyone?

Maybe France Vs Senegal will become a grudge match after what happened in the last world cup and what with most Senegalese players plying their trade in the French leagues.

As for portugal....I'd pay to see Sporting Vs Porto (provided Mourinho was managing one side, Rijkard the other and with Anders Frisk coming out of premature retirement to be the referee). If the winning goal was scored by that Greek bloke things would be even more fun.

Um...Soccer right? No disressepect but Soccer is very foreign here in America and I dont know the terminology not to diminish your post in any way! 😀

John McEnroe vs. Bjorn Borg. Ended at 7-7. Must watch that 1980 Wimbledon final one day.

How about Mike Tyson vs. the Public?

Seriously though, as much as we talk about the Yanks vs. Red Sox, Card vs. cubs, Giants vs. Dodgers, cowboys vs. Skins, there is no two people that hate each other more than Ali and Frazier. Those two would beat the shit out of each other any time and any place. I once read an article in Sports Illustrated talking about the history of the two and they were actually friends earlier in their respective careers. That is until Ali dissed Frazier in an interview calling him an Uncle Tom to the public. To noones surprise, Frazier blasted Ali in that fight. Ali whined for a rematch and won the next one which took it out to the Phillipines. The best fight I ever saw was the Rumble in the jungle. Each was on the ropes at many different times. I am amazed that it never made ESPN classic (at least I never saw it). The bad blood goes to the point when Ali was asked to light the torch to commerate the 1996 Olympics. Frazier was asked his thoughts on that and said that if he was there, he would have shoved Ali in the chamber where the torch was. I believe him

Giantfan not to sound snotty cuz we all make mistakes but the Rumble in the Jungle was Ali vs. Foreman. You mean the Thrilla in Manilla, Ali-Frazier III which Ali won by TKO and it was so brutal that it took the greatness out of both fighters.

You're right Wickerman. My bad. Thanks for pointing that out. That fight was as brutal as they came. I wonder if Ali was punch drunk from that fight explaining his current condition

Its cool Giantfan, you had the fights right just the titles they name the fights wrong. As for Alis brain damage id say the fights which are most responible for his current condition are all 3 Frazier fights and the first 2 Norton fights. Larry Holmes said on ESPN classic that he was pulling his punches in Ali/Holmes because he didnt want to hurt Ali. Holmes also said he could have ended the fight in one round...I believe him.

In that same article in Sports Illustrated, I also remember how Frazier takes the credit for knocking a few screws loose in Ali's brain. I wish I kept the magazine because there was some sensational stuff in that article. It really gives you the inside of what was going on in anticipation to one of the greatest shows of that time. Getting back to Frazier, he almost sounds like he is rejoicing at his current condition, It's almost sadistic when you think about it, but, by the same token, there is a part of me who understands his position. He was dissed publicly by Ali over and over again. He was called an "Uncle Tom", "ignorant", a "monkey"

Yeah I agree. Ali certainly "pushed the envelope" when it came to Joe Frazier. They almost had a fist fight when they both were on a talk show when George Foreman was champ. Well the object in boxing is to hit your opponent hard so can you fault Joe Frazier? Holmes toyed with Ali but Ali was 40 and couldnt hurt a fly...Frazier fought Ali around his prime and couldnt afford mercy. Ken Norton and Rocky Marciano often times when they had an opponent beaten and it was clear that he was just taking punishment would stop punching and tell the referee to stop the fight because the guy was hurt. They didnt want to permanently hurt anyone, thats class!

That's true spoersmanship. Everyone forgets that boxing is a sport and not a barroom brawl in the middle of the ring. If it was that would be one steep cover charge. Seriously though, today you wouldn't hear of such a thing. Do you think Mike Tyson would tell the referee his opponent was hurt? Not a chance in hell.

I think I remember that show you were talking about. I am actually amazed anyone would let those two in the same building let alone the same stage.

When Holmes fought Ali he stung like a butterfly not a bee.

Ah! Say what you want about ol Mike Tyson but in 1988 he was a killing machine. Micheal Spinks walked in the ring with fear in his eyes, Tyson saw it and hell I saw it too! 90 seconds later Spinks(who robbed Larry Holmes of 2 straight descisons) was demolished. Tysons downfall was Buster Douglas. He never recovered from Tokyo. Everyone laughed at Douglas, Vegas wouldnt lay odds on him. Little did anyone know that Douglas recent mothers death would convert him into an avenging angel who trounced Tyson in one of the worst beatings in boxing history. Tyson clung to some stupid standing 8 count techniquality hoping to get the match reversed but it was investigated and quelled...the timekeeper began counting 1 and a half full seconds before Douglas even hit the mat. Did anyone think to check that? No. Well HBO did and sent it to the WBA and WBC and Douglas was vindicated. That was pathetic. If Tyson lost (and he lost BIG) he should take it like a man. I guess as most people say Mike Tyson no matter how old he is, will never be a man.

Dear oh dear!!!........

....all you "Johnny come lately's" to the world of "greatest sports rivalries".....My Club Derby County has been around since 1884 and has had an intense rivalry with Nottingham Forest for most of that time. You septics dont know you are born when it comes to this type of thing.

Oh and BTW the fact that Americans may not have heard of it has no effect what ever on its legitamacy. Why should the fact that septics have not heard of it make it less important Wickerman?

Still so much work to do on this site!!

Have to agree with you! That Summer of 1980 was classic.Borg beats McEnroe at Wimbledon with that 4th set tiebreaker going to 18-16.
Then McEnroe denies Borg a US Open crown in September and again the following year.

I think the Packers/Vikings have more of a rivalry that the Packers/Lions do TF4U. Of course the classic rivalry there is the Packers/Bears. Your Mets classic rivals are the Phillies id say. Greatest football rivalry is the Raiders/Broncos and Baseball do I even have to say it? Hockey I guess it would be Montreal/Toronto and Basketball Lakers/Spurs. Other sports... Boxing Ali/Frazier. Then again TF4U you are older than me so you know more about the history of these rivalries but I like a rivalry that stays on forever! :Grrr:
