Yes, I'm in Bangalore, India on a business trip for the next 5 weeks. It's amazing! The 26 hours of flying was rough mostly because the flights were all completely booked. My coworker and I got up and walked around alot and even had a conga line going down the aisle a few times just to get the kinks our of our legs and backs. But we got here safely and when we exited customs reality struck!

Traffic is horrid! The pollution is intense. The poverty is a jolt of reality and the people are just wonderful. 2 lane roads are generally 3 or 4 vehicles wide. They mostly drive on the left but it's common to see vehicles on any side of the street they want or even right down the middle. There are trucks and cars, lots of scooters and motorcycles (some with an entire family onboard) and some 3 wheeled-2 stroke rick shaw type of vehicles all over the place. We are fortunate enough to have our own driver who knows his way all around here and he's a wonderful driver - thank goodness because there are no seat belts in the cars.

We started out in a 5 star hotel but they moved us a couple of days later to the campus. It saves us commute time of approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours one way. Here on campus we are in dorm rooms that Motel 6 puts to shame and wouldn't even reach 1 star status. By Indian standards they are wonderful premier rooms. It's the paper thin mattress on the wood platform that's so uncomfortable for me but I added another mattress to the top and it's tolerable - sort of. It makes me realize just how fortunate we are in the US.

They have a pool, a huge gym, pool tables and ping pong. We have bikes to ride around campus so I'm getting lots of exercise and fresh air( as fresh as you can get anyway). There are restaurants on campus and a Domino's Pizza that delivers to your office. The only food problem we've run into is that due to India's Independence Day celebration, the campus food courts are all closed.

The security on campus is very strict. Purses and bags are checked both going out and coming back in. Armed guards and guards with sticks are all over the place and jump in quickly if they see anyone bothering us when we're outside waiting for our car as happened yesterday. I'm sure experiencing some culture shock over here but I'm still enjoying myself immensely.

The people are just wonderful. Warm and friendly and very courteous. We've had some wonderful meals in town but we stayed away from the Lamb burgers at McDonald's. No beef! I've tried some of the Indian food but it's far too spicy for my tastebuds. I'm such a spice wienee! We had dinner Friday night at a wonderful Italian restaurant with fabulous food and impeccable service.

So I'm doing good and so are my counterparts here from the US and Europe. Our project is going pretty well. We've had a few issues but nothing major so far.

Next weekend we're heading to Mysore Palace which is a day trip from here but well worth the drive or so I've heard from many who have been here before.

I'm already missing home and I've only been here for 4 days so far. I guess Dorothy was right.... Toto - I don't think we're in Kansas anymore....ok, ok... California!

Although it's 11:30 pm Sunday in California. it's 12 noon on Monday here in Bangalore. My shift is over at 3 pm and my back-up will take over then.

Take Care everyone.

Thanks for letting us know what you're up to, QB. 😀
Enjoy your 5 weeks there, and have a safe trip home. :grouphug:

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Jani! How fun! A million thanks comes from Chris G for squeezing dinner with him into your insanely busy travel schedule! :bowing: He had so much fun with you and Dan! He departs for home on Friday~I will miss him dearly, what a sweet shy gentleman. Have a beautiful time and please, for the travel deprived (me), take LOTS of pics? :xpulcy: Love ya cutie patootie! :redheart:
XOXO

Wow, Jan, you are so exotic! I always wanted to go to India. But now I don't! Yes, I still do. No I don't!!! Yes, I do. Oh, I don't know what I want. But Plano, TX comes pretty close.

Well, have fun, say hi to Karisma Kapoor (spicer than the food!) and explore new worlds over there. How do you say "pockets" in Hindi?

Indian traffic is indeed legendary!

However, you in the US indirectly owe a lot more to India than you might think.

Update from Bangalore

Wow...What an adventure!

First, the people are just so incredible it's hard to put into words. They are so gracious and so accomodating here. The group I'm working with are such hard workers. They are totally focused on their work. If they run into a problem they really go to all lengths to find out what's wrong before raising it to me and when they do they provide incredible detail making it pretty easy for me to figure out the next steps to take to get it resolved. I'm so very impressed with their knowledge levels and their dedication.

The food here has been great. I shy away from the spicy stuff but I do like to try the different foods they have here, most of which is quite good. Last night I was invited for "chaat" which is kind of like an afternoon snack and tea. I had a samosa and a chicken roll. The Samosa has a tortilla like wrap and is filled with potato, beans and spices. The roll is chicken and spices. The samosa was great, a little spicy but very good. The roll lit my mouth on fire! The Indians don't drink with their meals so I was almost frantic for water or something and had to excuse myself to go back to the office to get it giving my Indian counterparts lots of laughs.

I haven't been off campus since our go live on Sunday night. We work long shifts and then it's time to rest for the next day. We're working 6 days a week here which doesn't leave much time to play. This weekend we changed our plans. We're going shopping Sunday morning and having a brunch with our entire support team and the management team. Then Sunday afternoon we're going to an old temple just outside of town that was built in 768!!! I can't even imagine that.

So.. back to work for me. It's about 8 am Friday morning here and 7:30 pm California time. My day is starting and for most of you it's ending so have a great evening and I'll update you in a few days.

Jan

Thanks for the update Miss Jan! It sounds like you are having a great time.

Fill us in on the temple when you get the time. (and perhaps a few pics to share upon your return)...

We love ya hon!....Be safe...

Hmmmmm..."conga line going down the aisle"......where you get to dance directly behind somebody :woot: So did you get any opportunities there, Jan? 😉
Have a great visit and have a samosa for me.

Glad to hear you're enjoying a rockin' time over there Jan. 🙂 English touring cricketers regularly report India as being the country of biggest wonder and diversity they visit.

Glad you're having a good time Jan and I hope the rest of your trip is just as good and that you have a safe trip home. India sounds fascinating but my choice would be southeast asia (Vietnam, Cambodia). Growing up during the Vietnam war and watching documentarys and movies (Deerhunter, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, both the orginial and redeux) but anyway India is still on my list. Take care.

Wow Jan you get around girl, lol. Sounds like a great time even if it's for work. Six weeks is a long time to be away from home. I agree with Ray, we want to see pics when you get back. Sounds great.

Sandee

Hey Jan...glad to hear your safe and enjoying! I must ask, is there any tickling to speak of in those parts....lol?
Anyway, continue to be safe. :smilelove

Hi there QB :wavingguy So happy you got there safely. It is great to know you are doing well. We love you back here in Michigan and pray for you and hope you have a great time and a safe return to us. Love you sweetie. :bouncybou :Kiss2:

Just a quick update...

We're really having a great time here in spite of working long hours and a 6 day work week. This week will probably be all 7 days! At least that's the current plan. I'm gonna be pooped out!

Last Sunday we got out to do more shopping. I'm doing alot to help the Indian economy! LOL.. We also had brunch at a lovely hotel in town on the veranda with our local host managers and our entire support team. It was a great break for us all to get food off campus and spend time together not working! After brunch... yep... more shopping! One store even gave my buddy and I duffle bags to carry all our goods home.

Bangalore has really surprised me. I thought it would be rather dry and very hot. I'm told Bangalore has the best weather in India. It's almost always around 80 degrees and humid but not bad at all. It rains a few times a day but only for about 5 minutes and then stops.

Everywhere we go we're treated like celebrities. Our driver has been taking us to the non-tourist areas for shopping and places were we are getting terrific deals. Bargaining for the price is a must around here. I'm sure not used to it but I'm getting pretty good at it.

The costs of things is so surprising. A typical meal runs about 35 rubees which is about 75 cents. The food here on campus and at the finer hotels and restaurants is fine to eat. We've had very few problems. The worst part is the medication I have to take to avoid getting malaria. The medication makes me a bit queezy but not bad.

So... it's about 8 pm on your Monday (Pacific time) and it's 8:30 am on Tuesday my time right now. I've got to focus on work so I'll get going.

Take Care Everyone!

Jan

I find it hard to believe that you would be pooped at all Jan. You have more energy than anyone I have ever met. I get the feeling that you are probably taking charge of India yourself. 🙂 It is great to know you are doing well and hope you do get a chance to relax a little bit. I hope you realize you are in our prayers and we love you very much. Take care. :grouphug:

More updates from Bangalore

Hi Gang!

Well we're two weeks completed and 3 weeks to go here in India. I've just switched to the late night shift recently and will stay on this shift for the last three weeks to give one of my counterparts some day light hours to enjoy. It's been an adjustment to sleep during the day and be awake all night but it's only for 3 more weeks. The primary problem I'm having is that they're doing lots of construction in the Guest House where we've been staying so it's pretty noisy and not restful at all. I'm fixing that today.

After my shift today I'm moving back to the 5-Star Hotel where we started. I'll have a long commute to get here and back but having a nice mattress to sleep on, enough blankets to keep warm, and the peace and quiet will be well worth it. And at least being at the hotel I'll be able to eat something nourishing even if I miss the scheduled meals. Here on campus, if you miss the meals during their hours you're out of luck! And the gym is only opened during hours I'm sleeping or working so that hasn't worked. The gym at the hotel is opened 24/7 so I'm really looking forward to staying at the hotel.

Last weekend the other two ladies and I enjoyed a 5 hour spa treatment at the most fabulous Hotel I've ever seen in my life. The Hotel with the spa was absolutely elegant in every square inch of the place. It was a beautiful oasis in the midst of town. We got the full treatment from head to toes... yes I said toes!!! And the people at the spa even treated us to dinner afterwards in a fabulous library bar in the hotel. It was the perfect end to a lovely day. We stayed at our own 5 Star hotel that night enjoying the nice rooms and relaxing by the pool. We really needed the relaxation last weekend after working these 6 day weeks and 12 hour days.

Shopping has continued to be a fun part of the week. I've done more shopping over these last two weeks than I've done all together over the last 5 years! The merchants keep wanting to sell me carpets!!! I don't want any carpets! The problem is there's not much to do on campus other than walk around, read books and walk around some more. Thanks goodness I brought a big supply of books with me and so did my counterparts so we're swapping books when we get done with one.

Oh... Traffic here is amazing. Lots of 2 lane roads with 5 vehicles wide all the time. It's common for horns to be blaring. Scooters, auto-rickshaws and motorcycles are always zipping up between and around you. I've seen people sitting on the tops of buses regularly, cows wandering freely along the roads and more stray dogs than I could have ever imagined. Stop signs and lights are an option. At some intersections they have timers counting down when the signal will change. When the counter gets down to about 20 - engines start to roar and everyone inches out into the intersection. The people here are incredibly patient even with the traffic chaos. It's rare to see anyone lose their temper or get uppity about anything.

So... right now it's Wednesday morning here and Tuesday night there in the states. I'll be going off shift in a couple hours. I'll walk back to the guest house on campus, finish packing and our driver will take me back to the hotel for a good days rest before tonight's shift.

Everything is going quite well. I'm so impressed with our partner company out here and what they achieve on a daily basis but moreso I'm quite impressed with the country in general. It's just a lovely area filled with incredibly wonderful people whom I've grown to respect even more today than before I came here. This has truly been a wonderful experience that I will treasure for many years to come.

Glad you're having a great time, Jan! Stay safe, and have as much fun as you can stand! ...and then some! 😀

Wow Jan,
It is great to hear from you. I know I am glad that all is well with you. When Sadira awakens I will let her know you were out here. Her and I think about you and I know she will be glad to know you are doing fine. I am happy all is going great for you. I hope you don't work to hard and get back to us safely. Are thoughts and prayers go out to you and we love you.

Godspeed,
George

Long Weekend in Mysore

Well this past weekend we had two days off so we took a road trip to a town called Mysore. On the way we stopped at some historical sites where we got to see some incredible waterfalls; a centuries old 2 story tall statue of Nandi, the Bull God; a temple built in 768 carved from soapstone and granite that was remarkable and Mysore Palace. Mysore Palace was the primary palace of the Maharajah in this section of India for hundreds of years. It was rebuilt in the early 1900's after suffering a fire. The current palace is breathtaking. If you'd like to see pictures go to www.mysorepalace.org. We got to see all those areas plus more. The colors are incredible throughout the palace. The tile work and attention to detail seems quite incredible even today.

We stayed at a 7-star hotel which was a converted palace. They had warning signs on the veranda doors warning us not to keep the doors order for fear the monkeys would come into the room!!! Actually the place kind of reminded me of a cross between the Winchester Mystery House meets the Shining with all the little steps to go up and down, around corners that didn't make sense and places where you could look down into other rooms on the floors below you. But the dining room was breathtaking. So elaborate and all in tones of pale blue.

We did lots of driving on back country roads encountering lots of cattle, sheep and goats being herded about. Then we'd come into a small little village here and there. Getting the chance to see "real" India was so interesting and amazing to me.

Then, this week India is celebrating some festivals. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is the celebration of the birthday of the Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god who brings success and abundance. It's a 10 day long event. The country is lit up with lights and all the shrines are elaborated decorated with flowers and streamers and what we know of as Christmas lights. That is followed by a celebration of Mother Mary (Jesus's mother) and it's a huge celebration celebrating motherhood. I'm thrilled to be here during all these celebrations to see how the country celebrates. The fun thing I see is that all religions participate. Hindu, Muslim, Christian and more are all involved together to celebrate.

So now... it's a little after 3 am India time. I'm going to go back to focusing on work and I'll send updates again later.

Jan

I just love your vivid descriptions of India, it must be a fantastic experience for you. Somehow I envy you... 😉

BTW: Did you know that Ganesha is also the God of thieves?

Take care of yourself!
