How many of the members here own firearms? Personally I'm planning on purchasing a handgun pretty soon, but I'm not sure what to get. I'd like to get a desert eagle myself. Any thoughts or recomendations. No I don't plan on waving it around or anything stupid. But I've had my heart set on owning one for awhile now.

If home defense is one of your reasons for buying a gun, I recommend a shotgun. Pistol rounds have a nasty habit of penetrating interior walls and injuring family members. A shotgun blast will take out the intruder without that additional risk. And the distinctive sound of a shell being pumped into the chamber will often send the intruder sprinting away without you having to fire at all.
This is not to say you shouldn't buy a pistol for other purposes, of course.

No gun, but i own a crossbow. It's really cool. Fires these little suction-cup darts :cool2:

Depends on what you want it for:

Desert eagle is a 50 cal not good for anything but shooting buffalo, deer, and engine blocks. It’s bigger than Dirty Harry’s 44 Mag. Down side not recommended for home defense because the bullet will go thru the person you shooting at and at least 5 other homes within a mile

44 Mag. Same as Desert Eagle Reliable large caliber gun, not much use except unless your outside and shooting at still targets great distant away

357 Mag. Reliable Very large caliber weapon, can use 38 rounds, so you scare way most attackers be the look, if you have to shoot the recoil is not as great and it will not go thru, body, home, doors, walls, steel box. Ect. If you use the 38 rounds only.

44 – Reliable large caliber gun, not much use except unless your outside and shooting at still targets great distant away.

45 – Good weapon for home has a kick to it, hard to aim at moving targets unless you been lifting weights. Only hold about 7 rounds

40 cal- Most police departments use this weapon great for home nice kick, also have you the capacity of a 9mm 10 – 15 rounds if you still can find the 15 round mags.

9MM - Very fast rounds, not much kick like a 22 cal. Down size if your using it for home have to shoot the person more than once because the bullet moves so fast most bigger people, “muscle bound” people will not know it until they already have you in their grab and downing what they want to do to you. Great for target practice

38 – Reliable firing weapon, can bounce off a window if shooting at an angle only shoot 6 rounds, Great for targets

12 Gauge shoot gun with 00 buckshot and short barrel; Excellent for home defense one shot equal 9 38’s at one time. Like getting hit by a 300.00 defensive lineman running at full speed. Don’t have to really aim at attacker just point in the direction one of the 9 will get them. Plus most people know the sound of a !2 gauge being cocked.

I’m no expect in fire arms just have a few of them myself.

don't own guns anymore, but IMO ...

40 (10mm) to 45 cal is best for home/personal defense; 5 shot snub 38 with shrouded hammer for backup/concealment piece.

when I did own guns, my fav was a 4" barreled S&W 629 that I only shot 44 special thru.

best target 44 IMO Ruger Redhawk long barrel ... but that was one heavy s.o.b.

dunno if they make 'em anymore, but fav ammo was Winchester Silver tips.

you should pm Shooter now there is a gun expert. he has every kind you can think of. he is great with targets. he is a member on this forum

Lesse...I have a .40 cal Glock in the car and a .556 M16A2 Assault Rifle in my room.

They both have bright orange muzzle tips, so they fire 6mm plastic pellets, hehe. Still pretty damn scary at night.

The day I turn 21 I am buying myself a REAL weapon.

I want a Desert Eagle for fun and a .45 cal Glock with the GAP cartridge for defense, oh, and a REAL M16A2 for target practice and intimiadation purposes if someone wants to walk into my home without my permission.

Man I had no idea desert eagles were that powerful. Guess I wanted one because it's a truly visually appealing gun. Home defense would be the major reason I'd own one. How about the 9mms or stloldg you've recommended the 45? Are there any standard regulations in terms of a specific gun you can and shouldn't use for home defense.

A friend and myself both have 9mm, he sometime carries his but mine is in a draw in my room, mainly if someone comes through the window wanting drama.

Never been a big fan of guns, but I do support our constitutional right to own them. I've been thinking about purchasing a weapon for home defense, as I live out in the country, and a 911 call isn't likely to yield quick results. I'm a little hesitant, because they are dangerous, and I'd hate for any accidents to occur. Maybe something simple, like an AK47 or something.

Who is shooter isabeau? And who makes the 9mms I mean which company? How much do they normally go for? The desert eagles seem to run about a thousand. But I can't get over how sexy they are. I'll live with a roomate and no kids so I don't think I need to worry too much about an accident or neglagence. Although I would take it to a shooting range from time to time. I would be worried about it going off somehow like while I'm trying to store it or something

Yeah and at close range (which you most likely would be in, in a self-defence situation) very effective, mostlikely will stop an attacker, and paint your walls red at the same time.

I have 2 40 cal, an 5" and 3.5" they give you the power of a 45 and with the ablity to carry 10 rounds per mag.

I dont know about purchasing a gun. Nowadays even if you use it on intruder the law will come down on you. Maybe in the 1980s when men were real men a gun would be a good idea to keepsafe yourself and your loved ones but we live in a sick, paranoid, facist age where having a gun could get you in serious trouble one way or another. Thats just my opinion. :atom:

...the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed, baby!

Lessee now....

There's the Taurus Model 66 .357 magnum in the nightstand with the Pachmeyer grips, awaiting the day some stupid ass breaks into my home while I'm asleep. Standard load is a home defense round by the Eliminator-X company that delivers 100% of it's energy to whatever it hits, so that if I miss (unlikely, but always possible), it won't go through a wall and kill someone in the next room or a neighbor. I had a laser mounted on it at one time, but my grouping is tight enough that I really don't need it. I'll put it on my next automatic instead. Probably a Colt or Para Ordinance .45 combat frame with tritium sights. Or maybe a Browning Hi-Power.

Next, there's the Remington Model 870 Express 12-gauge in the closet with the barrel trimmed to just above legal length. Again, standard load is for home defense, but rather than the artillery of buckshot, I went the other way, with trap/bird shot. Again, not going to penetrate walls in the home, but increasing the chance of hitting exponentially, because rather than several large pellets being fired, there are dozens of small ones in a larger spread. I'm a firm believer in the shotgun for home defense. As has been previously mentioned, the mere sound of a round being chambered in a pump-action shotgun gives an intruder a very good reason to reassess why he's in your home, and if he keeps coming after he knows you're toting a shotgun, well, that's called natural selection. They're clearly crazy as a shithouse rat and need to be put down. Plus, you'll be doing the law enforcement that responds a huge favor when you tell them that you were afraid for your life. Makes their paperwork ever so much easier.

There's also my Savage-Stevens lever-action 30-30 with scope, which I bought intending to take deer hunting and have yet to indulge in. I see that coming true sometime next year. 😀

And finally, having saved the best for last, there's my SKS Sporter. My baby. The one that Bill & Hillary would love to get their pinko commie mitts on. My own personal Weapon of Mass Destruction. I bought this rifle over the counter before the BATF Nazis added it to the list of weapons you're a bad person for owning. It came with a detatchable 5-round magazine, to which I've added 4 lovely 30 round clips. It's 7.62 just like the famous AK-47, but much nicer-looking, with a thumbhole stock like a hunting rifle instead of the standard one. I *may* have a bipod for it, I can't remember. I'd intended to get a 75-round drum magazine for her, but those are hard to come by these days. She's sweet. Not exactly an ideal home-defense weapon, but ya just never know, do ya? Better to have too much than not enough, I always say.

There was an opportunity I passed up that I'll kick myself for the rest of my life over back in my military days. I had a chance to legally purchase an M-60 machine-gun. I didn't go for it, even though I could've put it on the American Express at the time. *sigh* What would I DO with it? Heh. Defend my country from all enemies, foreign or domestic, baby.
