After seeing -TEE-- it was almost certain the the first letter was S.
LY was the only ending I could think of after the S was filled in.

Now I'm just guessing again.

I can almost never solve them when they've got proper names in them, so if Steely Dan is correct, then I don't feel bad about not getting it.

Mark 19's guess of "D" solves it: STEELY DAN! I wasn't trying to make it a "trick question" by using a proper name; this was literally the first thing that came to mind when I was called upon to make a puzzle. Steely Dan is far and away my favorite musical group, but apparently I'm in the minority there!
