Hardcover Book Jackets: on or off?

Paperbacks are better, I agree. But when I'm reading a hardcover (like a Harry Potter novel) the book jacket never rips or gets in the way, so I just keep it on. The poor book would feel nekkid without it!

I try to keep the book jackets on, but I end up taking them off because they fall off anyway when you try to read.

I remove the jacket and toss it away. I like the hardcover as it is just fine.

Jacket on, only because I'm a completist (a.k.a. anal). Everything has its place and the book jacket's place is on the book, a naked book is just...wrong .

Many here have expressed a preference for paperbacks.Easier to carry,no doubt.Less expensive,absolutely.I will dispute the claim that they are easier to read.I find just the opposite.When possible i always get the hardback,even if its second hand.Amazing deals are to be had on Amazon and several other online sources,and what better way to spend a rainy afternoon then browsing used book stores for that undiscovered gem.🙂

As someone who works in the book business, unless the book is not supposed to have a jacket, such as a leather-bound Easton Press, the jacket stays on. It protects the book and simply looks nicer.

Also, one of the first things you learn in the business of buying and selling books is that about 90% of a books worth/value is in the dust jacket. For example, I occasionally see first editions come across the counter from people selling their merchandise. Dust jacket on and in good condition = valuable and worth money. Dust jacket off, regardless of condition = just a few dollars to trash...depending.

Nothing will decrease the value of a book faster than removing the dust jacket.

On another note, does it really surprise anyone that Bella is so particular about her books? After all, she'd rather read than work in the garden.
