There may not be a gathering near you, but you can learn about and become involved with the community by talking to folks in various threads, and in the chatroom.
Most of the people that I've seen successfully join the community from a location with no local sceen, have spent time getting to know folks as people and friends online, and then get invited to gatherings they may have to travel a bit for.
