Hooray for Senator Glenn!!!!!!!!!

Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Sen. Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive and impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the Armed Services do what they do for a living. This IS a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of the Military.

---------------------------------

Senator Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a "real job?"

Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions.

I was in the Space Program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine to five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank.

I ask you to go with me as I went the other day ... to a Veterans Hospital and look at those men -- with their mangled bodies -- in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee...and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this Nation, and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?

I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held a REAL job. And they required a dedication to a purpose -- and a love of country and a dedication to duty -- that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! ---What about you?"

For those who don't remember - During WWII, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA. Now he is a Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher.... If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran.......

Dan,thanks for posting this I couldn't aggree more with Senator Glenn As for that other Senator,he is a dick in my opinion Typical commie lover:sowrong:

Wow...it's been awhile since I thought about those two. And what they did (and didn't do) for Ohio...tripping down memory lane.

Solid points that Senator Glenn makes. I think the good Senator Metzenbaum could have made a good response (and it's possible he did... one should be wary of reading too much into a debate where only one side gets their say), but it's difficult to refute the simple fact that the military, and more importantly Astronaut training, EASILY qualifies as a "real job".

Now, Senator, on the other hand... 😉

First, let me say that I fully support the views expressed by former Senator John Glenn.

Dan, do you know when this exchange took place? I remember that Metzenbaum declined to stand for reelection to the Senate in 1994, and his term ended January 1995, so it had to be at least nine years ago.

Actually, Mils, yes, I do....

...not only do I remember it well, but I've been deluged with the same question from about two-thirds of the people I've shared it with. But some things are timeless enough to keep sharing, don't you agree? Or did you just want to point out how old this is? 🙄

No, I actually wanted to know when it happened. It is timeless, and well worth sharing. 😀

John Glenn is a Great American...

In my experience...there are many people out there who don't think of military personnel as people. They're considered little more than morons incapable of living their lives in the real world, or as perpetually intoxicated sexual brigands who can't be trusted walking the streets without close supervision, or, merely rednecks or dingbats. There are many people who basically couldn't care less that military people are on watch, twenty four seven, telling us in a confident manner that they have our backs...their stockbroker's far more important.

You know, I knew guys who worked fifteen, sixteen, and maybe twenty hours a day, on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, working with FUEL. Tired? Feeling sluggish? You're not allowed that option!

I remember Howard Metzenbaum. He was a pompous, hare-brained blowhard who didn't know shit from shortcake about anything other than powerbroking in the United States Senate.

Um...a reminder...if in legal difficulties, in this country, you are entitled to representation, no matter what your political stripe, no matter what crime you are accused of. Period. No ifs, ands or buts. That goes for Communists as well as Ku Klux Klansmen, pedophiles, lobbyists, and commentators on the FOX Network.
