I once read the book "Something for Nothing" by Brian Tracy, and in it he bemoans how government employees:

have little or no job performance standards to meet,

are actually discouraged from solving problems, because that will mean their department will not be as "needed" anymore,

are actually reprimanded if they do solve a problem, because it makes the rest of the department look bad compared to the employee who solved the problem,

when there was a government shutdown, 95+ percent of government employees were found to be non-essential, that it didn't matter if they came to work or not,

get ridiculous amounts of perks and privileges,

it takes tons of red tape and hundreds of thousands of dollars to remove one incompetent government employee, so most of the time the powers that be don't go to the trouble,

are allowed to "double dip", retire and collect a pension, and at the same time start working in another dept, and build up another pension; nothing like this is allowed in the private sector,

government employees are generally considered unemployable in the private sector because they are lazy and incompetent, and have no necessary skills.

are unionized,

are rewarded for increasing the size of their department, rather than job performance,

are basically coddled and spoiled in general.

I don't know about you but this sounds like my dream job, getting paid and getting tons of perks for basically sitting around and looking busy.

How do I get in on this? Please help!!

LOL. Just like 80% of the private sector.

Have you considered a career in sales management? Sales managers of my aquaintance do far less work than your average DMV flunky, and are better paid. All you have to do is know how to cover your ass while kissing your boss's.

If your heart's set on the public sector (shudder), look into taking the civil-service exam.

Cultivate a healthy skepticism about anything anyone tells you about government work. It's generally exaggerated in both directions.

If you want to get in on this alleged great deal, every government agency at every level has a job board, usually online. Pick one and go for it. See how closely it matches what you've been told.

Totally take you up on that Rochester Cop thing. Send me an application.

To answer your question, Nepotism. That's the way you get these jobs. Hooray for family!

How do you go about getting an easy cushy government job? Easy! Do all you can to prove yourself crooked and unworthy of trust. They'll come looking for you! :jester:

....oh. thought you were talking about any gov job. if it were any gov job I would've said see about contacting homeland security to see about getting a job checking baggage at an airport

Loose your morality and principles, cheat on your wife with about seven women, smile a lot, agree with everyone and start slagging people off in a psudo-inteligent way, then fill out a political party aplication form.

Once you've been accepted into the party, work your way to the top with loads of backstabbing and spreading of rumours.

Seriously It's something you have to work at, gaining trust in the right places, doing a good job and not minding the slack you will get in the papers when stuff goes wrong, as it allways does. I don't think there are any shortcuts unless you know someone at the top, but if you got and job that way then you would most likely not be able to handle it.
