At the beginning of the recession I was donating plasma twice a week as my profession... could not find a job at all. applied to literally dozens of places. Finally got a job in Nebraska (from iowa originally) but I definitely don't take it for granted because last one hired is usually the first one fired. has anyone been laid off during the recession? anyone landed a job? I was just on one of my other forums, and more than one of them have been laid off recently, so I was wondering if any tmf'ers had any stories they wanted to share?

I got laid off at the end of last year so I've been out of work for about 3 weeks. I've had a few interviews and a few coming up next week, so I'm hopeful I'll find something soon, I'm also posting ads to take on a few guitar students so hopefully I can start pulling in some money doing that as well.

Good luck to everyone

I am lucky to still have my job. My company did some layoffs but missed me so far. (so far) I have been working 7 days a week this month and as Maxwell Smart said "and loving it". I feel empathy for those who have lost their jobs( I have been there before) and try to be thankful in spite of the salaried workload. I do think the economy will come around but not for about two years at least. I do not feel we have even hit bottom yet. We have moved most of our manufacturung overseas for cheaper wages and fewer tarriffs, and had gambled on the housing boom going on ad infinitum. The Democrats and Republicans blame each other. I think they are both right.

Laid off in December along with 10% of the company, and we are talking a mulitibillion dollar company. It was a dream job, but has launched me into the industry and I feel confident about the opportunities around here. It hurt at first because the position was needed but I thank God for the opportunity I was given, the money that fed, housed and clothed me for that time, and for a very generous severance package that so many others aren't getting. Just another rung in the ladder of life. Learned from it and will live on and continue to keep everyone else in my prayers, because almost everyone is feeling the effects of the economy everywhere.

Nope, as my job is enjoying education as long as I don't screw up I don't have any problems.

When I get my MSc, it will be different, but now I don't have any problems.

I've been laid off three times over the last two years. Doesn't help that my city rivals with Detroit MI for poorest major metropolitan city in the nation either. Job opps around here have been really bad.

I have 4 weeks left on unemployment and hope for something really soon because I don't want to apply for extended benefits-I want to work. My recent MBA has been a hinderance and not a benefit since potential employers see me as a flight risk. How about letting me decide what I'm willing to work for instead of you? There's a novel concept!

I'm hanging onto my world by a thread but I'm still hanging on. I still have my home, suv, and the things that are most important. I'm still able to help my daughter through college even though she worries about me constantly. I hate that pressure on her-she's so young to be so concerned about her mom.

I'm hoping things will get better soon, but I might have to move in order to find work and that saddens me. I've lived here my entire life and my sisters are childless and are aging-they will need my help soon. Went through a terrible bout of depression but I'm feeling better now. Previous meds had crappy side effects that I'm still dealing with but overall feel better.

I'm ready to go back to work now-can someone help a girl out over here???

Funny that Kis mentioned Detroit, as that's my stomping grounds! It reeeeaallly sucks around here. Layoffs are a daily occurance, by now, it's just something expected...not surprising at all.

I too lost my job and I haven't been able to find one since. There's actually a LINE to wait thru to get a job at a McDonalds or a Burger King around here! Hell, I went thru 3 seperate interviews for a job at K-Mart that paid $ 7.00 an hour! You would have thought I was applying for work at NASA or something! As it turns out, I didn't even get that job for some reason or another. They probably found someone to do it for $ 6.00 an hour.

All you really hear around these parts is that your over qualified for the position...which isn't surprising since the state unemployment rate is at 10%! By the way, that 10% is just the people collecting unemployment. Those whose unemployment ran out and who are still looking for work are not counted as being unemployed anymore. Truthfullly, our unemployment rate is much higher!

I finally just decided to go into business for myself and last year I lived in poverty as I learned stuff I needed to know and pulled everything together. It was hard and very scary, but last week was the first week that I actually had extra money in my pocket in a looooong time! Far from being rich obviously, but it made me feel a little better. I now have to just keep building on that.

I hope the economy ends sooner as opposed to later. My state was hit first and we've been in a downward spiral for years already! We can't take 2 more years! So many empty homes and people with nowhere to live. I always pray for those who are worse off than me.

I feel your pain.......truly I do.

I hope your entreprenurial efforts continue to pay off and you never have to depend on anyone else for your paycheck. It's harder that way, but I think it's better. If only I had the creativity and fortitude to do the same....:sigh:

I think maybe it's a little better here in Texas than it is in other states, but lay offs are still out and about. At least here, if you get laid off you can always go to the day labor site until another job comes through. I'm fortunate that i have a job that is funded alot by taxes.

The company I work for began by cutting back hours and then starting laying people off, but I still have my job thankfully. I went back to grad school to to try to get a recession proof job because the job market is so terrible. If it weren't for my husband being in the military and having a salary job instead of an hourly job we'd be in a really bad place financially.

1. Cost of public transportation has gone up.

2. Cigarettes here are around 10 bucks a pack.

3. Lost my free lunch at work and prices have increased.

4. Less hours.

So far we haven't been terribly affected, I have a job that people always need and I don't plan to lay myself off, but Mr. Bella's job is supposed to go POOF in the next few months and then we'll see...we're planning for that so it shouldn't be too horrible until he finds another gig but still...ick :evileye:

Doing okay here...

The grocery business is doing okay, as it always will -- hey, you gotta eat! Admittedly, I am way overqualified for my job, but I got three raises and two promotions in '08, and I'm going strong.

In short, I am one poor bastard at the moment. Scraping by for the most part. Not that I don't try to better myself. It's just taking its sweet time to happen.

Prices are up, but that's about it for me. There's no shortage of troubled youth to work with. Pay's not that great, and almost no one wants the job (few can handle it, anyway -- we have vacancies, and no one applied to fill them), but the job security is pretty awesome. I'm taking OT every other week and sockin' away the dough when I can.

According to the British Prime Minister the whole thing is the US's fault. Thats all we hear, when ever he opens his mouth. Its the US and their pesky sub-prime loans. Nothing to do with the Prime Minister of course, who has been in charge of the UK economy for ten years!

Now he tells us he knows what the problem was all along. Funny he never mentioned it before the shit hit the fan tho. And now of course he tell us he knows how to sort it out.

He has spent ten years bragging about the UK economy and taking all the credit for it. Now its gone tits up he tells us its nothing to do with him.

Laid off dec 23rd

since then ive been driving\traveling more

Ironic

Living off unemployment and relaxing while i can

Other than the worry of money in my mind, my life remains unchanged

well I do contracting for the government so Im weathering it ok. Someone actually even called me about a job that would be a big step up for me

I have not lost my job but the hours have been fewer. Modeling gigs have been almost non-existent because no one has the money to pay a model. Needless to say I can't even pay my rent in its entirety and actually make so little that I qualified for food stamps. I am desperately trying to find a second/better job just to make ends meet. I am actually trying to find someone to buy my jewelry even 🙁 not cool but hey you do what you gotta do.

Things would be comfortable right now, but apparently gas guzzling '04 Chevy's and brand new 4-wheelers are more important.

from a material standpoint ive benefitted from the recession, as my job's still going strong along with salary. and when i move this summer rents should be down (which in nyc means maybe i can find a decent studio for 1500)

but the whole thing is really depressing. my roomate got laid off, my good friend got laid off...

this is a really interesting read, especially if youre a new yorker but i think anyone could relate to it on some level: http://www.observer.com/node/43959

My company has announced a reduction of 10% of our employees worldwide. I'm really lucky, that I won't be affected. Having a secure job in times like these is something to be really grateful for. I've had a couple of customers going bankrupt withing the last few months. Scary times.
All my best wishes to everyone who's struggling right now.

As a fellow plasma-donor and a Nebraskan I hear ya. The job market here apparently isn't as bad as the United States as a whole, but we still have our fair share of econo-blah.

My job's trimming hours, and a second gig is elusive right now. Which would've been manageable -- if I hadn't had to go to the hospital a few weeks back. Now I'm gonna be spending every penny I make from now till fall on bills coz I don't have insurance.

Which is some major poop, man.

I was lucky enough to get a job offer today that I will be accepting. So it looks like I'll be back to work in about 2 weeks, pending a background check (clean) and drug screen (clean)!
