I think of tickling as an interest, activity, fantasy, and many other labels. I've long avoided the trend to call it a fetish because the clinical definition of a fetish as Ann and Forever Rio have pointed out refers to objects, not activities. Also, tickling can be a paraphilia, but only when it interferes with normal functioning. One can have an active interest in tickling and derive sexual pleasure from it without it being either a fetish or a paraphilia.

I for one do not believe that a fetish is respresentative of the disease model. It is a minor bybroduct of influences at the earliest stages of the development of sexual identity in a childs mind. This accounts for many here who can account for being tickled as children or being around it created their fondness and these types are also the most likely to have it as a true sexual fetish. On the other hand there are a large number unaccounted for that have it for reasons they cannot explain, even a possible hereditary theory. And I am also well aware that many here do not associate it with sex and do in fact just enjoy it for what it is and as an innocent (or not so innocent ) pastime. I do not think it should be classified as a mental disorder.

You don't get more authoritative than the DSM IV. Jen, Forever Rio, P50 and others correctly point out that tickling cannot be a fetish since it isn't an object. And also that tickling (or love of tickling to be more accurate) is not per se an activity that interferes with normal functioning (sexual, social and otherwise). Many on the Forum have said that if you sadistically tickle someone in a nonconsensual manner that you need help. These are the small minority. To many tickling is done for fun in a non-sexual playful environment, for others erotically as part of sexual gratification. And for many it's both. Bravo to Jen, P50 and Forever Rio. This thread gives me hope.
