How Often To Clean Out Your AC Filter?

I cleaned out my AC filter yesterday, for the first time in the year plus that I've lived in this apartment. The filter was filthy! My A/C, a window unit, hadn't been working too well, and someone I know suggested that I should clean it out. It certainly needed it.

My question is: How often should I clean it out? I use the AC, a lot, when I'm home, due to the hot weather, but do turn it off when I go out, except on very hot days.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Once every few months....probably once a month during the hottest months of the season.

Definitely at least once a month, if you don't need to change it just clean it I'd say every 3 weeks to maintain cleaner air and a better operating unit. I changed my filter in my central unit yesterday and it runs way better now for it!! With AC units the cleaner the filter the better!!!

Monthly would be good for it especially if there has been a lot of pollen or dust in your area.

I HAVE A NEWER MODEL AIR CONITIONER....................................

and it automatically tells you when to clean the filter.

Nowadays with the heavy use I would say to everybody:


CLEAN YOUR AIR CONDITIONER FILTER!

carl, that sounds cool. Wish I had that. My AC is an old model, even though they claim it is one of the "newer" ones in the building.

People have been using their air conditioners hard during this Heat Wave that we are experiencing here on the East Coast. If necessary you can go to to your local hardware store and purchase a New Air Filter. This will make your unit run more efficient and help reduce electric usage.

Generally, there's no reason you should do it more than every four months. The one exception would be if you have pets; if that's the case, you should probably change that to every two months.
