Here is a thread for you all to post your experiences with this hurricane.

I notice at 17:32 that the first bands of water were coming in over South Florida.
 
South Florida being hit.

Many airlines are cancelling flights from Florida.
 
Figures. First a once in a century earthquake (with aftershocks) and now a hurricane...

UPDATE!

The hurricane is starting to batter the shores of Myrtle Beach. New York City could get hit hard. Living is going to be rough in New England.

We're going to be very close to the eye wall when it comes in...which means we'll likely have some of the worst winds as it passes over us. We're inland a bit. So, that will help. If it holds the current track, we could be in the tornado quadrant. (The north-eastern quadrant generally gets several short-lived twisters blowing up. Eastern side gets the worst of the winds. Western side gets the worst of the rains.) So, we're likely to get a good shot of both being close the the eye wall.

I ran to the dollar store a bit ago to grab some extra snack stuff (and a manual can opener for Drew's mom). It was mobbed! It made me very glad that we didn't wait until today to stock up. We've had all the actual necessities for a couple of days. We even got extra since our neighbors are too broke at the moment to stock up on things. So, we'll be helping them out as well.

So, we're as set as we're going to get. If we lose power before the heavier rains die down, we could get some water in the cellar. And, the neighbors on the other side have a huge old elm tree that concerns us a bit. But, we're hoping for the best. Things can be replaced. People can't. We'll take it as it comes.

I'll try to keep people updated, but if I randomly disappear it is due to no power. I've asked a friend to call me and post on here that I'm fine.
 
We fully expect to lose power here...possibly for several days, which is what we prepared for. I'm planning to monitor conditions on my scanner and follow what officials are up to. So, if it looks like we'll be out longer than what we prepared for, we'll just do smaller meals. Our grill may get more use than ever! lol
 
I'm in Norfolk, Va, and also expect to lose power/water for at least a few days. Right now, lots of wind and light rain, but the worst is yet to come. I have two weeks worth of water and food stored and hope everyone else in the path of this storm in prepared and stays safe.
 
I am the biggest storm junkie and have lived in Delaware for years, however recently moved to Tennessee, and go figure here comes the big storms, and quakes. ahhhh Thats my life. In any event you all stay safe on the coast. My sis called and says Delaware is begining to feel some of the winds and rain, but still much left to come.

I love theatrical thunderstorms and such but I draw the line at threats to life, limb and property. Speaking of which, I hope we don't see much of that, if any.
 
They just issued mandatory evacuations for several towns along the CT coastline and the Governor has stated that all state roads will likely be closed to all traffic as of Sunday morning at nine am though he "strongly recommends" that all people be off the roads by 9 PM this evening....
 
The main part of the storm is in North Carolina moving toward Virginia. It has not started to rain here yet in Central Pennsylvania.
 
UGH! I hate waiting! Can the storm be here already! Apparently it is moving slower then expected. I have about an hour and thirty left. It is windy and raining. Some parts have already started to flood and they say all the main rivers are rising.

It's finally moving out of our neck of the woods. Luckily, the damage wasn't as bad as expected. We are still waiting to hear from people about the damage that might have been done to the properties down on the beach...
 
Irene should be hitting us sometime early tomorrow morning, and last through most of the day. With an extreme amount of luck, the power will stay on.

One can hope. 🙂
 
It just hit Virginia pretty hard about an hour ago. I live about four hours from the coast in VA but it is still hitting pretty hard. It is really windy and rainy here. I was working at the mall when it hit and all the power went out and everyone reacted like the apocalypse was happening, hehe. I got off work early and went and bought some groceries, a flash light, and candles. Better safe than sorry. The power in my apartment is still on (I don't want to jinx it). I just want all this horrible weather to pass. Hurricane season is such a pain. My prayers go out to everyone right on the coastline. Be safe and make smart choices <3

they have actually made mandatory evacuations in my town down by the shore area as well as other coastal towns surrounding me. The eye of the storm is supposed to come pretty darn close to me or anywhere between Stamford - New Haven....

We are hunkered down for the evening and even plan on sleeping on the lower level.....and now they have just issues tornado warnings on top of everything else!! I am ready for this to be over already!! Rain is starting to come down hard...
 
My neighborhood still has power, water, and phone service. Amazing! With all the fallen trees and damage, I still have electricity and water.
 
Damn Irene isn't letting my dad come home from deployment! I'm not a happy Air Force brat right now. But it's starting to rain pretty heavily here in the Philly burbs.
 
Oh it's starting here alright. Capnmad and fireguardian are already without power and they're 45 mins from me.
 
Only sprinkling now. We're under a wind advisory, 20-30 MPH winds with gusts to 50.

Flashlight and freshly-charged Ni-Mh batteries, check. Portable radio with recent batteries, check. (The wholly-robotic Clear Channel stations will probably keep on cranking out pre-programmed pap as though nothing unusual were going on. The two NPR stations actually have actual human beings on duty despite their becoming more computerized of late). Fully-charged cell phone, check. Ready-to-eat food, not so much. Medication, a-ok. Stored water, working on it. If my power does crash, I don't know what to expect. We had a pole transformer get fried by a plain, vanilla thunderstorm a few months ago. That left us in the dark for *nine hours*.

Listening to a couple of DJ's on WFMU in Jersey City, just across the river from New York City play songs like "It's Raining Today", "When It Rains In America" and "Riders On The Storm", and make stupid banter between tracks.
 
Woke up this morning with power, so a hot shower and breakfast makes today much nicer.

Looks like we might be missing the brunt of the storm. We'll see how it goes.
