Don't get anything if you are that unsure, and definitely don't ask OTHERS what to get since YOU will be the one having to live with it for the rest of your life.

I decided against a tattoo because I really don't think there is a symbol or picture that would fit to me my whole life. Not even to think about when I am 70!

If you absolutely want to get one, get it in a place that you can't see! 🙂

I am a huge fan of tattoos, but because of my dad I can't get one yet 😀 When I get the chance though, I'll be getting a bear tattoo, as this is my nickname and my favourite animal. I think, if you decide on having a tattoo, that it should be something that describes your personality, or has some meaning to you. If you have time and are interested, you can read the history of tattoos in wikipedia. It's an ancient art, and has meaning and sense in it 🙂

HAHA but wouldn't it be great to get a tattoo of your ideals. That way you can never forget them and never have to save them over and over you just show people when they ask. Seems like a great idea to me.

well since its your body...you choose...I say....get em all!!!! they are addictive once you start...Ive got 7...and Cyn has 17!!!!

I have many, each one my own custom design representing something meaningful in my life. If you feel the need to ask others what to have then I would suggest not going ahead. However, if there is something of meaning to you then imagine a concept, tailor your very own design, and absolutely go ahead and do it. If, in the future, you don't like the tattoo, then you may at least still like it's meaning. Choose wisely - not off the wall in your local tattoo shop (unless the perfect one for you already exists there of course).
Be warned, as mentioned, they can become addictive.

Funny question - how does one transcribe said "perfect tattoo" from their mind onto their flesh if they themselves aren't an artist?

Easier than you think with a digital image, or by combining parts of digital images (shapes, patterns, etc). I'm certainly no artist but managed it just fine - some of them took me hours to do, but that just increases their 'worth' to you.
I also have a few that were developed over more than one session, based upon my own concept, but actually drawn by a professional artist and modified according to my tastes. If you can describe it there will be someone who can draw it, and draw it exactly how you imagined it. I recommend this option for anyone who wants something more elaborate than a plain design but has no artistic talent, like myself.
LOL, I like body-art, can you tell? 🙂

Go for it! i have starts, hearts with wings and a rose 🙂 they are common but never go out of "style" they are addictive thought..lol, but im sure you have heard that before

Both of my tattoos I picked out about 5 minutes before I had them done. I guess you could I'm spontaneous, but I don't regret them one bit.

I'm not telling anyone what my next tattoo is going to be until after I get it. its a secret. shhh.. lol

Tattoos are fun! Especially when you're really really really drunk. That's when I got mine. I suggest getting them somewhere very inconspicuous. I'm not sure if you're a professional or have aspirations....but they are very much looked down upon in most fields. I'm not sure what type of lifestyle you lead but I have numerous formal events...and nothing looks worse on a date than a dolphin or something equally silly when she's doing her best to look classy. Actually it's quite funny to look at....here's an example:

Keep it classy and clean. Subtle goes a million miles.

Mine is similar and inspired by this.

Shit, I just read back through this thread and realised that comment is likely to get people's backs up - not to mention makes me sound like some kind of awful 'tattoo-snob'.
I just want to clarify what I meant, since many people do just that, and rightfully love their tattoo. If you see a perfect design for you, then that is absolutely what you should go for, regardless of where you found that design.
sillywiggles, if you want a tattoo then definitely have one (hell, have lots) - they're great. However, if you are seeking the justification of others first then I think you would ultimately be happier if you gave it some more thought first. By choosing something unique and meaningful you have the justification of yourself - you will never get 100% justification from others over something as permanent as a tattoo anyway.
I'm sorry if I caused any offence. I don't think custom tattoos are superior to more common ones at all, although it did sound like I was saying that. I only meant that custom ones are easier to justify to yourself if, like me, you find the prospect of something so permanent a little daunting.
