Whilst 'Master of Puppets' is my favorite album by Metallica, I enjoyed each album on their own accord. Sure, black album isn't thrashy like their first four albums, but it was still good (with St. Anger probably being the worst album).
Metallica's reknowned for doing whatever they want to do, and the fact that they choose to move different directions deserves some respect in itself.
'Tuesday's Gone' was good because they could pull it off. Have you seen Hetfield cover that country song "don't you think the outlaw bit has got done" at that live gig thing on youtube?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2byurEW-wfU The fact that he can do that and sound like a country singer just goes to show his versitility as a musician.
'Turn the Page' was a wicked cover, I loved it! And the album 'Load' has some ripper tunes on it, 'Bleeding me', 'Outlaw Torn', 'Ain't My Bitch', '2x4'...sure it is different to the shit you'd hear off Ride or Justice, but I reckon it is good. I believe that those who don't recognise their musical direction and accept it as a part of the Metallica experience really don't fully appreciate them as a band.
Let's face it, Metallica's upcoming album could be terrible, but they would still sell out stadiums all around the world. It's no wonder this album is taking so long for them to put together, cuz they keep fucking off overseas to play big festivals, because at the end of the day, they are a live band, who will make whatever music they want and pull it off live in a spectacular show that will forever separate them from the rest of the pack.
However, I read in an interview, Kirk said that the new album could be the missing link between 'Justice' and 'Black'. They are going back to a 9 or 10 song album, the guitar solos are back, from the looks of that preview they sound like they've got there sound back pre St. Anger.
Now we play the waiting game....
