"Kura Tumanako, who lives in Hastings in New Zealand's North Island, admits to breastfeeding her pet Staffordshire bull terrier for the past two weeks. She claimed that she started breastfeeding the puppy when her daughter stopped taking her milk. She said she didn’t want it to go to waste. Tumanako plans to wean the puppy off in about six weeks. Her daughter, who is two months old, is only using bottled milk. Her reason for doing this is so that it will be raised with her baby and will protect her as they grow."

I read about this yesterday on CNN. I can’t even offer an opinion on this – just plain bizarre and disturbing. Apparently in the article, the lady when on to say "he drinks more than the baby. It doesn't hurt, but it's a little bit ticklish." Perhaps it was the word 'ticklish' that appeared in this article that made it that much worse - ick.

Hmmm.....well, to each his/her own. No one was harmed, so I can't find fault with it. This simply goes outside the boundaries of what many people would consider the norm.

That IS weird but, it's touching too. I don't know if this could be or is considered to be an abomination however as it doesn't sound like anything sexual is taking place so... I don't know. I guess it's okay...

She does sound like she's got a few screws missing but no harm is really done (until the pup gets a little bigger anyway...but then I fear for her breasts more than anything).
I remember a few years ago reading about a woman in India who breastfed an orphaned monkey. They are sacred where she lives and this was a great honor for her. Most people thought it was weird but I thought it was sorta cool.

The only thing I would be remotely worried about is if she does this in front of her daugther. While the baby is probably not going to remember this, if she does, it provides interesting questions later, and what exactly would she tell her?

She's running the chance of confusing her daughter needlessly.

And the idea that just because she's sharing her milk with the dog that the dog will be more likely to protect her daughter is pretty stupid if you ask me. The dog isn't going to care about that later. Its either going to naturally take to the girl, not take to her, or be trained to take to her. A mother's milk has nothing to do with it, and theres isn't some cross-species rule that would make it true either.

I always heard that if you spit in a puppy's mouth it will grow to love you. :weird:

Totally...it's really warped that she's robbing her daughter of her own milk because of some notion that it will enhance her daughter's relationship with the dog. Someone got their priorities a little backwards, flawed logic or not. I doubt it would affect the kid much though other than being deprived of the milk herself. Ahe's only 2 months old and puppies are weaned at 6 to 8 weeks. At two months old children are pretty oblivious.

And then of course the girl may try to kill the dog later in a fit of jealous rage thinking the mother loves the dog more than her. Don't forget that possibility.
