waits for the laughter to fade.. i can hear it now.. aren't all Izzy's questions fairly silly??? but seriously i have this cool biker friend, and he wears tank tops all the time..he is built very well..sighs ok back to the topic at hand..he calls the tank tops, wifebeater tank tops..and has no idea why? does anyone here know why these are called wifebeater tank tops? they are very tight, and emphasize the body..sighs again.. i so love muscular guys, but not too muscular.

Because they're usually worn by drunken slobs who smack their wives around, and wind up on "Cops". Usually by men whose ample breasts and bellies are nicely accentuated by the shirt's snug fit. As a side note, here in Brooklyn, they are also called "Guinea Tee's" .

hm very interesting..however the guy i know who wears them frequently is not married nor a drunk...but he does ride a motorcycle...and as i said, is very nicely built.. but why called guinea tee's? my grandmother used to use the term guinea for certain types of people which i never understood..

😀 well, as someone of italian backround, i can tell you that it's usually used more with a jokingly affectionate smile than the 'WBT" thing. like so-and-so was all guido'd out, he had the chains, the guinea tee thing going on, showing off the tan. like that. it's kinda an old school thing that has just stood the test of time. but not with me, i like regular tee's.

Please excuse the ethnic reference: they are also referred to as wop-tops. I don't know how far back the term 'wife-beater' dates, but I tend to think of the movie The Godfather (again, please excuse the ethic stereotype). Then again, the person that really sticks in my head as wearing said shirt in the movie is not the actual wife-beater, but Jimmy Caan who beats the wife-beater for beating his wife. Are you following all of this :upsidedow , or could I make this any less clear? Well, that's my theory, anyway.

tis perfectly clear Mica..however i still can't seem to picture the shirt..as with Stanley in Streetcar named Desire, all i remember is an extremely tight t-shirt..white.not necessarily a tank top..and he had to remove it..sighs..

and Jimmy Caan hardly meets my standards for sexiness..ew sorry lolol..and also i thought he was wearing a standard t-shirt..am i wrong in thinking that tank tops are sleeveless?? also ewwwwwwwww he had hairy shoulders..ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww sorry lol.

increasing the sexiness quotient

Well, I wasn't going for sexiness in my explanation, persay. I guess I mistook the point evaluation criteria 😛 . Yes, the shirts were typically worn tight as they were undershirts :justlips: . Keep in mind that men used to (in the time periods being portrayed in these movies to some extent) leave the house wearing suits unless they were day-laborers :cool2: . And it's typical to wear an undershirt underneath your dress shirt :Kiss1: (perhaps even more so back then). The undershirt has a gaping collar, in my mind, so it won't show if you loosen your tie 😎 . So another reason for the term wife-beater is because they would be worn by someone around the house after removing their dress shirt  . Well, that's it- I'm all out of sexy icons...

ahh finally an explanation..and i know you weren't going for sexiness in your explanation, but nice try with those sexy icons lol...and now i finally know what those tank tops look like, after you posted that pic of John Travolta..and btw whether you meant it or not..that was one sexy picture lolol...

wop-top. i Gotta remember that. totally new to me. i'm due for a bbq with the goobas in a few weeks. can't wait to lay that on 'em.
i really think it started with "Cops". every wife beating loon is either wearing one, or no shirt at all, or transitions violently from wbt to topless in the course of whatever domestic disturbance the cops show up for.

I'd get arrested if I wore it in public though! :rotate:
XOXO
