I miss (American) Pro Football...anybody else?

jugner said:
American football is a girly game. They put a ton of pads on, and have plays that last 5 seconds.

Rugby and Australian football, that's where it is. Hardly any pads and play continues til someone scores.

Seriously, I do like college football. But worldwide, they look wussy.

You're right, you never said they are wimps...but that they play a girly game and that 'they look wussy'...yep, calling them wimpy is completely different. You know 1 guy that couldn't play rugby and that tells you everything you want to know about the difference between the roughness of american football and rugby. I think a survey of more than 1 would be needed to help make up my mind.

I said before I enjoy watching Australian football and rugby also, and it's definitely extremely rough and brutal, but the obvious truth is we have here are differing opinions on the sports we like which is fine. However, to make the statement you made, then try to backtrack and say you never said they are wimpy doesn't look real good for you.

I said before that if you can find me a Aus. football or rugby player that has played in the NFL in a position besides punter, let me know. Believe me, if they were good enough, the NFL would bring them over.

I was comparing it to those others, not making blanket statements. When I said they look wussy I said"worldwide," right before, everything has a context.

I only knew 1 who played both, but I knew many rugby players. Most got concussions every few games, and 3 I knew had to quit because of bone breaks (1 sternum, 2 shoulder).

I'm curious, I've watced the NFL, did any of you play in it, or do you just know by watching it too?

I doubt anyone here has played in the NFL,not many people make it past college level at best.I have however met quite a few former NFL players and talked to them. Its a brutal violent sport, even with the pads. One play can end a career and change their life forever.Earl Campbell, one of the best running backs in the history of the game is a cripple in his 50's because of the pounding he took in an 8 or 9 year NFL career.

Being a rabid Chiefs fan, I like it.

Kinda what I thought, I've heard I don't understand what the NFL is like, when I know as much about it as you, and yes, I have talked with fomer football players, Bo Jackson and Kevin Green(e), Bo's career ended because his leg was grabbed and it was dislocated, so that wasn't the roughness ofthe sport, reallyall he said is it was rough. Kevin said this, "Thank God we had pads". He said a lot of hits still hurt, some would knock you out kinda like a TKO, but his helmet and shoulder pads kept him from dying a few times.

So they should stop using common sense and play without pads like "real men?" With all the injuries they face with the equipment they have, you really think it would be in their best interest? All sports have safety precautions to protect their players. Football and rugby are two different sports. I guess boxers should stop wearing gloves and race car drivers really have no need for helmets or seatbelts. What makes you manly or more manly than a football player? I don't give a fuck about rugby, but it must not be as brutal as football if they aren't having serious injuries. You can hate on football all you want, they're a billion dollar business.

What? Nothing you said made sense. I cited incidents where people that I know had serious injuries. Please readmyposts if your going to respond to me. When did I imply I was more manly than a football player? I've said before, I do like football. Football is rough, just not as rough as rugby IMO. When did I say they should stop using pads? Also the use of vulgar doesn't help the integrity of your post.

Very true. It's just laughable when American football is considered a 'manly' sport.

'd rather take a hit from a 6'6 300lb man in pads, and me in pads(football), than a 6'4 240lb man with no pads(rugby)

So these aren't your comments? Maybe you should read your own posts before you reply to me. If you like football so much why are you criticizing it? And if they look so "wussy" around the rest of the world, as if it really matters, then why are the NFL games outside the US such hot tickets? You mean to tell me that a bunch of wussies are selling out stadiums around the world to a market that views them as wussies? Please. I'd rather go head-on with any rugby player than the likes of Ray Lewis or Sean Taylor. You claim that you like football, but I don't think you really understand how physically gifted NFL players are.

The first comment was directly coparing. The second was response to someone The third is only a piece of what I wrote. Like I said before, everything has a context. Tennis gets sold out wordwide, what's your point? Do you understand the physical gifts of rugby players?

Bottom line is, those are all your comments. YOU said it was girly, YOU said that worldwide NFL players are considered 'wussy', and YOU said that you don't understand people who think the NFL is a manly sport.

I didn't play pro, but I played my freshman year at a division II school, even there it was pretty damn rough. You've been backing down ever since you've been called out about what you said and you're not looking good. This thread was about people who missed the NFL, perhaps a separate thread should be started about who's tougher. Let's be honest, I think I'm tougher than them all because I live in Detroit and i've suffered the most due to the Lions! 🙂

jugner, honestly, you said those comments about American football players being "wussy". Why backtrack now.

I know some NFL players and the game is very brutal. Your quote of Kevin Greene should shed some light on the brutality of the sport. True or false, you wrote this quote? "Thank God we wear pads." What does that tell you? It means, we have "freaks of nature" human beings flying around a field at full speed and trying to hit as hard as they possibly can. You even wrote that the pads kept people from dying. What does that tell you?

Look at what's going on now in the NFL. There is a major issue of retired football players in a battle over their pensions to take care of their physical disabilities. We have many former players who can barely walk, barely write their own names because of the brutality of the sport.

Let's put it this way jugner, if any of those rugby players played American football, i can almost guarantee they would change their minds about the "wussy" mentality. A rugby player would have a very difficult time making it in the NFL. The caliber of athlete in the NFL is amazing. You really need to learn this before making random silly comments about American football players. The rest of the world does not have a sport in comparison to NFL. Rugby is rough, but NFL rough? Hell no.

Bottom line? I'm starting to thnk none of you know what context is.

Backing down? I don't know any of you, none of you know me, why would I back down?

Everyone keeps talking about how rough football is, no one is talking about rugby. So you keep talking about how bad football players have it, noone cares to ask how long rugby careers are or how often they break bones.

I started as a joke (one I believe, but still a joke),but instead of taking it as such everyone got defensive and holier than thou art, I watch the NFL too, everyone else watches the same thing I do, but I disagree that it's rougher than rugby so obviously I just don't understand.

Did you read the title of the thread before you entered it? You're the only one who came into a thread about American Pro-Football to talk about rugby.

I didn't. I said my first post was a joke, in it btw i did say I liked college football. Now yes I could've said this earlier, but it kinda ticked me off when I started hearing I didn't understand, when noon knows anymore about it than I do. So I did start it, but I was egged on to continue.

We all know it wasn't a joke, it wasn't written that way. If you said it as a joke then there would be smiley faces or 'just kidding!' quips in there. If that first post was a joke, then the joke is on you because you are a terrible comedian.

Well if you think rugby is rougher than American football, do tell. You say they break bones? And this different from American football how? We have all acknowledged rugby is a tough sport. No one here is saying that rugby players are wimps. We KNOW it is a rough sport. However, we do not believe it is rougher than American football, just by the simple observation that the athletes that play in the NFL are typically freaks of nature. I do not see a lot of "freaks of nature" in rugby.

I asked you about the sizes of rugby players? What is the average size? Do you have rugby players that are 6'5" tall, 270 pounds, and can run 40 yards in approx 4.6 seconds? There may be some, but there is a lot in the NFL. What are the bench press numbers of rugby players? Since you seem the know more about rugby than us, can you give us why their athletes are better "quality" than NFL players? Here is your opportunity to give us a breakdown on why you "joked" about American football players being "wussies" compared to rugby players. Give it a shot....

It just seems like so far off, not that i want to rush summer or anything but i really can't wait to see what my team will do this year (Hopefully quite alot)

Well ... the Bills just signed punter Brian Moorman yesterday to a four year extension. At least we'll be able to ... uh ... punt really well.

Yay.

Another plus is that it really takes the sting away from the Sabres losing Drury & Briere.

Oh , wait ... no it doesn't.

Being from Western NY , giggleygirl25 ... I'm assuming that the "my team" you're talking about is the Bills. That is ... until the franchise is moved to another city.

Yay. 🙁

The biggest thing is stamina, all the really big me can afford to bulk up becuse they won't exert themselves for more than 10 secs. Rugby players might get beat at football, but they would do better than football players at rugby.

Stopping so often and having seperate offensive and defensive teams is mainly what I meant. how often do you think a football player would stay at 270 if he had to run as much at rugby? A rugby player could hit you a few minutes into the game as hard as at the beginning. A football player is like a musket, grives you a good shot, but then needs time to reload.

And we all know that football players do have or need good stamina.

Compared to most people, yes
Compared to rigby players, not close

Football players hit harder than I would want to take, but a rugby player has to give a hit, take a hit, run around, and then do it again, and then maybe get to catch their breath.

Football came from rugby, pads were added because in rugby, to many people got hurt.

okay jugner, i will meet you halfway.

Rugby DOES require more stamina to play than American football. But, so does "soccer". Does that make American football players "wussier" than soccer players? I dont think so.

Your stance, or at least I think your stance, is American football isnt as "rough" as rugby. Now, even in your last post, you are even admitting football players hit harder. So, if they hit harder, how are they "lesser" than rugby players?

Look, rugby is no doubt a brutal sport. We all admit that. Our whole point to you is that American football players are some of the toughest athletes walking this planet, yet we have other countries thinking they are "lesser" men than rugby players or Australian rules football players. Now, please enlighten me, but are there former professional rugby players or Aussie rules football players nearly crippled in their later years due to playing the sport? I really dont know, so i am hoping you can tell me. I KNOW there are American football players with that problem. We just dont understand why other nations believe our players are "wusses". But if any of them were to just attend a NFL training camp, they would change their minds. They wouldnt last....Not even rugby players.

It's like that in the majority of sports. Football, basketball, hockey and soccer all have people who are good at their position. You can talk all you want about rugby, they wouldn't have a chance in hell if they played football. I don't give a damn how many skills they all possess.
