i'm considering getting a pet puffer fish

Some states won't allow you to have them, check your local laws. The main problem is that they produce a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin. Ethno-botanist Wade Davis identified this toxin as the main ingredient in making Haitian 'zombies'.

Nevermind the Canadian :canada: LOL 😀

I don't know anything about puffer fish, sorry

Knowing absolutely nothing about puffer fish i say......... go for it! They're way cool!

Get one and once you're bored with it you can eat it. One of Japan's favourites when it comes to sashimi. (you do need to follow a very difficult course on how to prepare it, they're the second most toxic vertebrates known to man)

If you miss him after, you can save the part you don't eat, and there's plenty of room in one of those to stick a tiny propeller in there so he can keep on truckin.

😀

just hang a wire in the centre on top of a round aquarium, stick the propeller in it's arse, attach fish, start propellor and he'll just keep on swimming forever 😀

I know that when they talk, they sound suspiciously like Brad Garrett.

I don't know much about them. Other then puffers being massively aggressive fish that should be kept as a lone fish or in species specific tank.

Arent those deadly?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrodotoxin

Yep, very much so. (at least, some of them) Blocks fast Na+ channels causing paralysis and, at sufficient dose, death. (respiratory failure)

In Japan there have been several deaths caused by this because you really need to know what you're doing when you're serving this fish, one mistake and you're dead within minutes. But it seems to be really tasty.

I worked in a specialty pet store for 5 years. Granted it was 5 years ago, but I'll tell you what I remember. I'm assuming that you're getting a freshwater green puffer instead of a saltwater one, as saltwater tanks can be a bitch to maintain. However, even freshwater fish need a little salt in the water to protect from disease (not table salt, it has iodine in it...aquarium salt), and green puffers need a bit more than normal too, almost brackish. Also, they're highly aggressive and territorial, and tend to kill other fish in the aquarium. They are beautiful though, I wish you well in keeping it luv. 🙂

What weasel said 😀 They're hyper aggressive but on the same token not quite as quick as barbs rainbows and danios so they go well in a tank together. The little bastard will prolly try to jump out too (everyone I've ever had has tried at least once) so make sure your tank has a good lid on it.
Just like said before, they like brackish water but I've had equal success in just introducing them to a well established tank (one that's had fish in it for at least 6 weeks). They seem to really like hanging out around air diffusers too.
Mine loved frozen bloodworms but I imagine each fish is a little different. That's all I got, good luck 😀

i know right? they're suuuuper adorable and wikianswers says that they recognize and interact with their owners.

I've heard of the interaction facet. Sounds quite fun!

I'd definitely take Filthy's advice though...

Go with freshwater if you can...

Having a saltwater tank is a SERIOUS TASK.

Best of luck...

Keep us posted!

They really do. They're kinda like betta fish, after a while, if you name them they'll usually start dancing around if they recognize it. Not to mention the awesomeness of seeing a fish happy about seeing a particular treat container through the glass.

i must not've paid enough attention to my betta, because he never really seemed to give a damn about me.

gawddd i hope i can get one. i'm in love with puffers.
