I felt oddly inspired today to write something. Fair warning, I'm not a writer. This isn't something I feel I'm particularly good at, but sometimes I get a wild hair to put something into words. Please forgive the odd typo that might be there. I was doing this without a proper word processor. So gather around and I'll tell you a tale...
-----------------------------------
The woods stretched on for miles in every direction. Look back down the barely maintained trail I could hardly tell how far I'd come, but I didn't feel tired at all. That didn't mean much. There was something about this forest; something intangible. There was a feeling of something beyond the senses that made me keep going, like it was calling to me.
My boots crunched twigs and leaves beneath me as I ventured deeper into the forest. I could feel a tingling in the air as if surrounded by a kind of magic. Curiousity had taken control and I moved past trees towards a clearing not too far ahead of me. A feeling of caution came over me as I approached it.
The clearing was larger than I'd expected, and the ground seemed far rougher suddenly. Small knolls rose across the landscape, and small crevices and gulleys ran between them. There was a sound coming from one of these gullies. It was a voice of some kind, but it was no animal that lived in these woods. It wasn't human either, though it had a child-like quality to it. And it wasn't alone.
I moved slowly, staying low as I came upon the edge of the gully. I'd like to say that I didn't want to frighten off whatever was down there, but the truth was I was suddenly overcome with anxiety. Suddenly everything felt dangerous, but I'd come too far to turn back. I burned with curiousity. I put my gloved palms on the edge of the small ravine, and my bare fingers gripped the earth nervously. I peeked down, stunned into silence by what I found.
Below were four small creatures, no more than perhaps three feet tall each. They were thin... no, boney. They showed hardly any sign of muscle beneath their ruddy skin. Their faces were only vaguely human with long, sharp noses and pointed ears. They cackled and yipped and made all sorts of noises, showing off sharp teeth and forked tongues. They even sported pointed tails, which swayed with a certain giddiness.
"Run."
The thought raced through my head, begging my legs to move. After a second which felt like forever, I leapt to my feet, turning to get away before I was seen. I took a single step before I stumbled as the wide cuff fo my pants snagged on something. Panic shot through me as I turned to free myself, only to find a small, clawed hand had grabbed my pants.
I trembled as my eyes followed up the arm to the form of one of the creatures I'd seen in the pit. It grinned toothily as it held tight. Our eyes met. Its red eyes staring into my wide blue ones. Without warning it gave a harsh tug on my pants, sending me off balance and down to the ground. Another of the small creatures appeared next to me and grabbed my arm. The two pulled me over the edge of the gully and down towards the two others, who hopped eagerly as I was pulled closer.
My limbs thrashed to shake free and escape, but the creatures proved deceptively strong, keeping hold of me and continuing my descent into the hole. Soon the other two were upon me, grabbing my clothes and keeping me helpless in their grasp. I shook as hard as I could, crying out as I tried desperately to free myself.
Their grasping became more violent and their claws tore at my clothes, ripping pieces from my shirt and tattering my pants. One had even grabbed a boot and struggled to tear at the leather as he wrestled it off my foot, leaving it covered by just a small white ankle sock. My shirt was forming a split up the right side and I felt a hand works its way under it. It squeezed my side, whether on purpose or on accident I couldn't tell, but the sudden sensation made me jump and squeal.
They paused for a moment, looking back and forth at each other and at me. The one who'd squeezed my side put its hands on my tummy as the others held me helplessly. I squirmed to get out from beneath it, but it was no use. Soon its fingers began to dance over my skin, scratching lightly and forcing my teeth to clench against the sounds I wanted to make.
Why was it doing that of all things?
It didn't take long before my best efforts at steeling myself against the sensation went to waste, breaking down as helpless giggles began to flow. I tried my best to keep myself under control, but the exploring fingers of one of the other creatures under my left arm made any further attempts to control myself completely pointless. My arm fought to move to my side, but it kept a hand on my wrist while its other hand went about its work, scratching teasingly in my armpit.
The other two were obviously excited by the sight. They pulled at my other boot, yanking it off along with a bit of the cuff of my pants. They seemed annoyed at finding even more cloth covering my skin and quickly tore my socks away. Fear shot through me as one of them sat on my legs, trapping my feet where I could no longer see them. My legs kicked to buck it off, but it held on and kept my legs pinned. As soon as I felt a set of tiny hands tickling away at the soles of my feet I screamed with laughter.
My body flailed as they held me down, tickling and teasing me all over. I begged for them to stop, but I couldn't even be sure they understood what I said. The only thing they seemed to comprehend was my helplessness, and it delighted them to no end to cause me to squeal and laugh. It didn't seem like they wanted anything else. They were like cruel children attacking a small animal just because they could.
It went on without end for what felt like hours. Finally I could breathe again. They had stopped. I opened my eyes, realizing for the first time that I had even closed them while I was laughing. They kept me held, though not as forcefully as before. One of them raised its hands, which were quickly surrounded by an eerie green glow. Before I could react roots had grown up from the ground all around me. They entangled my arms and legs, even wrapping around my waist and keeping me that much more immobile.
My tormentors made a gurgling sound which I could only assume was something like a giggle as they moved in on me again. I pleaded before they attacked again, begging them not to put me through another fit, but it only seemed to encourage them.
With their hands free, they became completely merciless, and I could feel a hand under each of my arms, immediately forcing me back into wild laughter. My arms quivered to get free from the roots that kept my wrists held to the ground, and my head shook from side to side, sending my auburn hair flying about.
Another creature moved back in at my belly, but its hands instead reached for my sides. As it started to squeeze I felt its forked tongue tease around my bellybutton. I bucked against my bonds as the tickling only got steadily worse. It yipped something at the other two, and I knew it that whatever it had just told them would only spell torture for me.
They scampered up to my feet, which were held tight my a root around each of my ankles. I shouted and protested through my laughter. It was all I could do to try and stop them before... no... it was too late.
Their hands attacked like lightning, little claws scribbling up and down from my heels to my toes, seeking out the weakest spots and forcing my laughter to a new level. My feet wiggled frantically to get away, but their nimble little hands followed easily. The gentle raking of their claws along my soles was joined by the feel of their tongues licking at my toes. I burst with laughter, practically screaming as they explored every inch of skin, even licking between my toes.
I felt like I was going mad as the sensations flowed through my body from all sides. It didn't seem to take long before I couldn't even fight anymore. Still they continued, though. Tears streamed from my eyes as my laughter became slightly labored. My lungs ached for the air I was being denied. I gasped and tried to keep myself concious, though I feared that losing it would be my only means of escape from this torment.
My eyes shut tightly, plunging me into a world of pure feeling. All that existed was darkness and the inescapable tickling coming from all around. Any sense of time and place was gone. This was my world. Finally I opened my eyes, forcing them open despite my laughter. I squinted as light broke through the trees. It was morning. My giggling stopped as I realized I wasn't being tickled anymore. I was actually alone at the bottom of the small gully. It was morning.
I questioned what had happened. Had I been tickled all night long? Did it even happen at all? Was it just a dream?
I sat up and felt a draft through my tattered shirt. My boots and socks laid on the ground a few feet away. It was enough of an answer for me.
I layed there for a few minutes, breathing deeply and calming myself from the memory of the previous night. The light of day must have driven them off.
After several minutes I heard a sound in the distance. It was the now familar cackling of those creatures. But not the four voices that I'd heard the night before. They were joined by others. They'd left me there to get their friends.
How close were they? How many? Did I have time to get my boots? How fast were they? Could I even get away?
"Run."
