Is it just me, or does this go too far??

*whacks Kalamos*Can I get whacked too?😀

What will this smurf thing create? Will someone be sued?

Nobody I guess: the author is dead. His family gave permission.
What about suing people who make bombs...

No, wait, I know the answer already: bombs don't kill people. People do...

...

Mmm... so... let us sue politicians for ordering bombings...

...

But they are bombing the bad guys.

...

Mmm... what about suing the smurfs?
I mean... we're going to reap all those ill-gotten smurfberries before they can say "attorney".

...

😛

I don't remember seeing lawyers within the Smurf's community, though papa smurf looks the part for the judge.

Is this the same peace loving UNICEF that knowingly funded a UN invasion of the Belgian Congo (Zaire) in 1961? Or, more precisely, the province of Katanga, in violation of the UN's own charter, complete with executions, rapes, etc?

Well, darn if it isn't.

Why don't I care?

And I suppose if it was the Smurfs bombing Gargamel (sp?) and his cat the uproar would be in reverse???

Dunno. The cat is named Azrael. Birba in italian, for some unknowntome reasons.

The "peace-loving" UN also helped to covertly support the Khmer Rouge after the latter's reign of terror was ended in Cambodia.

Mmm... so, since Unicef is connected with UN, and UN is not the peace-loving organization we expected it to be, the ad is more offensive [or less effective], because they are hypocrites.

Interesting point.

So, basically, since each and every country and organization has stains, nobody can really preach to anybody else.
Look like the stuff feuds are made of.

Shouldn't we be used to this things already????????? If you've ever heard a politician speaking, then you have most certainly experienced hipocresy first hand, everything else from that point on is just an echo, tha same crap about the same things again and again, and pretty much a do as I say and not as I do policy...

Well, that's why I don't get the original point to begin with.

...

Ok, let's assume Unicef is just as evil as any other organization made up by human beings.

The ad could be shocking, but it's aimed to adults.
If I recall well, captions read "protect your children from war".
Not "protect your parents from themselves".

Forgive me for being so simplistic, but we can't claim that war is "good", just because we assume Unicef to be "evil".

...

Sure, it's hard for me to gauge the ad from parents' point of view.
You see, I don't have children, but I used to work with youth, and they were fairly jaded to violence, thanks to tv and videogames.

Only the smallest child could be shocked by that ad, and parents shouldn't allow young kids to watch tv unattended anyway.
Even then, they should be ready to explain what the ad is about.

[I hope few of you guys are going to tell your kids "look junior, that ad is cr*p, unicef funds terrorism, and war is a glorious manly enterprise", or something along those lines...]

...

Mind you, I'm no bleeding heart liberal, a Saddam-lover, or something like that.
I just resent extremes and mess, and war is as messy, and extreme, as I can imagine.

...

Now... if you ask me, that ad is pointless.
Adults won't change their ways, kids won't be scared by a harmless toon.

And if we start digging up old history, nobody is really safe.

...

Just my thought.
Don't fret it, guys: I might change my mind someday.

😉

That's an illithid feline.
Or more accurately, a Cat of Chtulhu.

:wooha:What am I doing hanging with smart people?!....HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?!

Its a cat of photoshop.

Or maybe it's what happens when Zoidburg gets lonely and procreates with the neighbor cat.

Cheshire, you are truly a king among cats...men....men-cats.

ah, but have you analysed teh post-structuralist meta-thematics of such paradigmattic shows as the snorks?

This is actually hilarious.

Of course, the whole ad fails to note that war is necessary in some situations. Classic.

Anyone who's naive enough to let a cartoon formulate political opinions for them frankly shouldn't be allowed political opinions. As such, I'm surprised there's even an outrage about this.

Actually nothing could be further from the truth. Way back when, at their origins, cartoons were created for the sole purpose of political and religious satire. And this is going back to the 17-1800's....

VERY good point that I didn't even consider. The first one to come to mind, for me at least, is Franklin's "Join or Die" cartoon.

But I'm not sure that altogether eliminates my point. The Smurfs is vastly different from anything by Benjamin Franklin, and by now "cartoons" have evolved enough that they fit into entirely different categories. While the Smurfs have often been accused of being overtly political, this really does take things too far. It's like becoming a Republican because you think Kelsey Grammer is a good actor or conversely switching one's affiliation to "Democrat" simply because every single other American celebrity is one. The people who watch this show may be shocked and disturbed, but I doubt they'll turn their views around unless they're extremely stupid. There would have to be a better reason.

A cartoon of the Smurfs' nature really won't change anything, and it is silly that UNICEF is using it as a platform to voice very specific political views (of course their worldview as a whole would present itself in the show, no one's doubting that, but this is almost too specific). I'd rather they write a book about it. These sorts of cartoons can do nothing but give the children who watch it, and as a result their parents, a couple of sleepless nights.

That's why I find it rediculous that they're using the Smurfs to get their point across. Especially if it's geared towards adults, isn't there a better venue?
