It is impossible to tickle yourself...or is it?

I use to try to tickle my own feet when I was a kid and had some success. So I think tickling is more complicated then maybe we are lead to believe.

I think you can tickle yourself if you do not mean to, but intentionally is very much harder, I think

me too

I have the same issue with the roof of my mouth- I can absolutely tickle there. But I DON'T like it! Also my lips...I can tickle them by stroking them lightly, something that makes me nuts when someone else does it.

I have heard that it is almost impossible to tickle yourself, but the inside of my mouth seems to say different. I only have to stroke it a few times with the tip of my tongue and it sends me into fits of slapping and sucking the roof of my mouth as though lemon had been squirted in there. Is it only me?

I have read papers by physiological psychologists saying that it is impossible.

Howerver, at a gathering in Albany, NY, I saw TMF member NJJen give a demonstration of tickling her own feet. She really could make herself laugh out loud. So it may be rare, but it can be done by some people.

That seems as plausible an answer as any.

I am no physiological psychologist, but I can give a layman's guess (which will probably have individual exceptions). It probably has a lot to do with conditioning. Many of the extrememly ticklish people on this board probably had a lot of tickle play throughout life and were conditioned never to lose the same ticklishness they had as children. They could have tried to tickle themselves as children and succeeded before, as adults, they learned about the 'impossibility' of self-tickling.

I can tickle myself, but it's mostly on my upperbody, on my midsection, side, and ribs. I've tried to tickle my own feet, which are highly ticklish when others tickle them, and gotten no feeling or reaction. If, however, I tickle my stomach, midsection, or sides, it does feel very ticklish, and my stomach goes inward.

I can tickle my toes with a sonicare. It's SO hard to do though! I have issues making myself touch the sonicare to the tips!!!!! But it's possible. I showed people at the michigan party.

I can vouch for kitten. She did have a hard time getting herself to tickle her toes with the sonic care at the Michigan party. I sometimes can also with the sonic care but it's very rare.

I used to lick the roof of my girlfriends mouth while we were kissing and it would completely drive her insane, she hated it more than maybe any other kind of torment.

I can easily tickle my own feet, to the point I can not stand another second...but I never laugh from it. Only get highly annoyed...lol

I can tickle my own feet... but it results in more of an 'eyes closed tight kind for giggle' than laughter really... and I can't seem to stop myself from stopping.

after much experimenting, I have decided that just giving myself shivers is the most fun.

Yes it can be done, but again it depends on the person. My wife can tickle her own feet and yes she will laugh ang giggle too, out loud. (finguers, combs, brush, toothbrush) I have spoken too a few that say they can, and some of them have done it over the phone or the mic, or even on webcam to show me. I have even spoken to some who did not know if they could do that, and I have walked them though a way or two to try. For some it works, and for some it does not work, but all say then have a fun time trying and it is interesting to see if that can be done. Some of the ones who I have spooken too are not even involved in tickling as we are. ( not in the TMF or other groups ) I guess it can be a combination of not just how ticklish someone is, but also how open minded they are about tickling too. Just my two cents.

Creating tickling or tickle sensations yes but any length of prolonged tickling and creating bouts of extended hysterical laughter? No. Reactions and reflexes would make one naturally pull away or stop the tickling.
The style of the tickling will make the difference.
At least for MOST HUMANS? :tickle: 😛 :manicd:

Yes, some of us can tickle ourselves. I can tickle the roof of my mouth and just about any place on my body. It can often make me laugh; however, I cannot do it nearly as intensely or as long as others can do it to me.

I have read scientific articles eplaining why people cannot tickle themselves. I suspect that this is generally true; however, scientific conclusions are highly probable and never one hundred percent certain which means there can be exceptions. I personnally think that some of us exceptions here who can tickle themselves may be way more sensitive to tickling, may have much higher levels of ticklishness, may have nervous systems that are wired a little bit differently or the like
